Mercedes developing 35MPG Bluetec diesel S-class

Posted on Tuesday 5 June 2007

Mercedes-Benz is reported to be developing a new version of its S-class limo equipped with an ultra-efficient Bluetec diesel engine. With a motor displacing just 2.2L, the new diesel driven S-class should return a fuel economy rating of just 6.6L per 100km, or roughly 35mpg.

We should get our first glimpse of the new car at September’s Frankfurt Auto Show, with production scheduled to start towards the end of next year. Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport reports that Mercedes will be combining the four-cylinder oil-burner with its new mild-hybrid system to achieve the amazingly low consumption figures.

Mercedes previously showcased a Bluetec hybrid S-Class concept at the 2005 Frankfurt Auto Show, but unlike the concept car which featured a V6 powerplant, the production version will run a twin-turbo four-cylinder motor that produces 204hp.

The vehicle will be in full compliance with future Euro 6 emissions standards, which are expected to roll in by 2014, and we should see its efficient powertrain eventually offered in the E and C-class range.

sweeet. That's very impressive and could make Toyota consider a smaller-engined LSh.

2.2L diesel 4-banger lol. I thought S-Class buyers are all for the "prestige" and don't give a damn about gas mileage?

I think its a nice idea but that engine doesn't belong in a S-class. Kinda lol, Lexus has a V-8 hybrid and benz's idea is a I-4 S-class.

It'll be perfect for the European taxi companies

I don't even know what to say. I think a Kia Rio with 8.0 V16 would make more sense than an S class with a 2.2 diesel.

Huge slap in the face to Mercedes fans and S Class enthusiasts . A 4 cylinder diesel, twin turbo or not, hybrid or not, has absolutely no place in an S Class. At the absolute minimum, it should be a V6 diesel.

Yep, there goes the "prestige" thing out the window.

And I thought the last gen(w220) S350 was bad

This will probably be a euro market-only thing. We'll probably eventually get something, but it'll have more power.

Who would thought a certain model would consist of one of the fastest sedan on earth (S65) to one of the slowest sedan (S220?)

In Europe doesnt the 5 series come w/ a choice of a 4cyl engine? Or @ least it did. And maybe some other makes flagship models w/ 4cyl diesel that we dont have here in the US.

Only the diesel model 520d is 4 cylinder.

For non-diesel, even the lowest 523i is a 6 cylinder.

Yup thats the 1 I was thinkin of the 520d. Do the 7series, E-class, S-class or A8, etc.. have any 4cyl. diesels sold in Europe or are they all six cylinder or higher diesels?

E220 CDI is 4 cylinder diesel
E200 is 4 cylinder 1.8 litre Kompressor

No 4-cylinder's for S-class, 7-series or A8 I think ...
