Is it just me or does gold-badging completely ruin the image of a luxury car? I've been looking through different car ad sites lately and I've stumbled upon quite a few GS's & LS's with gold-badging. I hope I'm not offending anyone by saying this, but to me, it just makes the car look as if it's worth less. IMO, it just clashes with the grill and chrome accents and makes the cars look busy.
Also, in every one that I've seen, the badging itself never looks shiny. It always looks like a dull gold Christmas ball. Maybe if it looked as shiny as the chrome, it would be better looking?

It very much depends on the color of the car. I agree that faded gold badges look extremely cheap in any case. And often the gold badging clashes with the shiny silver of the other chrome accents on the car.
Black pearl badging can also look bad on certain colors of car. For instance, I have never understood why anyone would put black badges on a black car!

When it was popular in the 90's, it used to look decent on cars with pearl white paint, but that time as passed. If I bought a car with gold emblems now, you can bet that I'd de-badge the thing.

Never liked my gold emblems on my RX300, the got taken off and everything was smoothed over, even my front gold L was painted silver, but now has been replaced by a Harrier emblem.
I probably got this trait from my father, who also despised gold emblems, and I can remember removing the small gold tire caps on our XJ6 Vanden Plas and replacing it with silver ones. I can also recall the time we looked at a Grand Cherokee when they first came out on the market, and I remember both of our comments to the salesperson, "can you get rid of ALL of the gold on the exterior?"
However, if someone else wants this for their own vehicle, who am I to complain.

The only time I thought gold badging looked good was on the original Lexus SC 430 in the crystal white color. (that was when I still was a few years from being old enough to drive)
The black pearl badging still looks cool to me when done properly.
