Renault’s new Koleos SUV caught testing
Posted on Wednesday 13 June 2007
Recent spy shots of a heavily camouflaged SUV were previously thought to be a test mule for the next-generation Nissan Murano, but we can confirm that the prototype in question is actually the production version of Renault’s Koleos concept SUV. Due to hit the market early next year, Renault’s new SUV will borrow technology from the Nissan Qashqai and will be produced by Samsung at a plant in South Korea.
Part of the car’s development was handled by teams in Asia, where a rebadged version will be sold as the Samsung QMX. Nissan will provide the 4WD system, which can send 100% of torque to the rear wheels if the system detects any slip but in normal conditions it will remain FWD.
Posing as a genuine off-roader, the new Koleos is expected to pick up safety features such as Hill Down Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HAS), as well as 200mm ground clearance with front and rear aluminum protective skid plates.
As part of Renault’s push to make its lineup upscale, base models of the Koleos are expected to feature 19in wheels and a 180hp 2.0L diesel engine.

French carmaker Renault is performing the last tests on the production version of the Koleos SUV that debuted at the 2006 Paris Show last October. Based on the Nissan Qashqai, the Koloes will be available in the first half of 2008 with FWD or 4WD versions. The compact SUV is expected to be offered with the same engine range as the Qashqai which includes: 1.6-litre 115PS (84kW) petrol and 1.5 dCi diesel developing 106PS (78kW) and a pair of petrol and diesel 2.0-litre engines develop 140PS (103kW) and 150PS (110kW) respectively.
As you can see from Automotorundsport’s spy pics and despite the heavy camouflage, it’s obvious that design-wise, Renault hasn’t strayed away from the original concept. But who said that should be considered a pro? We had the chance to see the Koleos concept in person at the Paris Show and honestly, we found its design totally boring. Take out the Renault logo and you could pass it for any SUV.
Talking about logos and uninspiring designs, the Koleos will also be offered by Renault’s Korean subsidiary Samsung... The latter presented a rebadged version of the SUV concept at the Korean Motor Show in April. According to AMS, the Koleos will be built at Renault - Samsung’s Korean plant, with the Samsung version being offered solely to the Asian market
