Default Flying Lizard unleashes special Troy Lee Porsche 997 GT3 RSR livery for LeMans

PRESS RELEASE:

Lizards at Le Mans, 2007

Flying Lizard Motorsports, in its 4th year of professional competition in the American Le Mans Series and it's 3rd year competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has commissioned the design of a special livery for its Porsche 997 GT3 RSR. Troy Lee Designs, a noted motocross and automotive paint and design firm, has been working with the Lizards since the beginning of the ALMS season, and was given full creative freedom to reinterpret the character of the "Flying Lizard".

The team has made a focus out of fan development over the years, and tries to give fans interesting ways to interact with the team, and actively promotes itself to gain new ones. Working with Troy Lee Designs, the team believes it set itself apart within the sportscar community, and gains attention from the motocross and action sports worlds in which TLD is so active.

For the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Lizard and sportscar fans will be able to follow the action from the team's perspective in the following ways:

The 24 Heures du Mans begins on Saturday June 16 at 3 p.m. CET (6 a.m. PT). Follow the Lizards' progress:
- Listen to live team radio transmissions with team commentary at www.lizardms.com/radio.html
- Read the team blog at www.lizardms.com and at www.autoblog.com
- Listen to Radio Le Mans, available at 91.2 FM locally in Le Mans and streamed online at www.radiolemans.com
- Watch MotorsTV in Europe, and SpeedTV in North America. MotorsTV will air weeklong coverage and SPEED coverage begins at 5:30 a.m. PT on June 16.

The race week schedule is hectic, as it always is at Le Mans. Monday is the team's launch and scrutineering presentation, then Wednesday and Thursday see practice and qualifying for the 75th running of Les 24 Heures du Mans. Friday evening there's the annual driver's parade, through the cobblestone streets of old Le Mans. Each year, and estimated 125,000 people jam the sidewalks and balconies of the city to see all the drivers of the race as they're chauffeured the length of the parade route, waving and signing autographs. In between each vintage car carrying drivers, there are exotic car parades, marching bands and dance troupes from across Europe, and even flocks of brightly costumed Brazilian samba dancers. Quite a spectacle, and the only thing like it in the entire Motorsports world.

Saturday at 3pm, the race starts, though the team will have been up since 7am preparing. The longest day in racing won't end until approximately 10pm on Sunday, after the race is finished and everything's been re-packed and loaded on the transporter, bound for the Paris airport. In total, the team will have been in France for 23 days consecutively, and the whole crew will have been awake for nearly 40 hours come Sunday evening.

You may remember Flying Lizard Motorsports as the ALMS GT2 team campaigning a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR in this season's 12 Hours of Sebring. The Flying Lizard GT2 Porsche lost a heroic last lap duel with the Risi Competizione Ferrari 430GT. Video of the drag race through the final turn is total car p0rn.

The Flying Lizard Porsche has been running well in the first five rounds of ALMS so far, but it's come in second every time so far to a Risi Competizione 430GT. Obviously, these two teams now have a lot of history heading into the 24 Hours of LeMans this weekend, and despite the Ferrari taking the checkered flag every weekend in ALMS, a Porsche has only lost the GT2 class at LeMans once in the last 27 years, and Flying Lizard is keen to keep them on top.

Today at LeMans was scrutineering, which is a lot of pomp and circumstance that has all the teams and drivers congregate in the parking lot of the cathedral in downtown LeMans. Once they have run the gauntlet of media of fans, each team makes their formal presentation to the series officials. This year, Flying Lizard is spicing it up a bit by unveiling a unique livery for its Porsche 911 GT3 RSR designed by the well known Troy Lee of Troy Lee Designs. Lee was allowed to reinterpret the spirt of the "Flying Lizard" and created a car that will surely stand out among its competitors. The entire look is a vinyl wrap that will be applied this weekend and stripped back off after the race, meaning it will only appear in public just this once. Hopefully we'll see it in the winner's circle, as Autoblog will be following Team Flying Lizard very closely. They've promised us lots of pics and updates on their progress throughout the race, which we'll be sure to pass along to you.
