there has to be more to this story. i'm sure this person was caught street racing, but i think there's another reason to destroy this car. I'm guessing failure to pay impounding fees.

So you take racing and crushing and turn it into a news spin.

Cruel and unusual punishment.

It's alittle too extreme to crush a car for street racing. Impound it, throw the driver in jail, whatever. But crushing it is too much. If the street racing resulted in injuries and/or death then ok, but this is just too extreme.

If someone commits DUI, I don't expect them to crush the bar . I'm not saying that street racing doesn't deserve punishment, but crushing a car would require a lot more reason than just racing.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Fourth Amendment provides "just compensation" for seized property unless it is contraband (e.g. illegal drugs).

While it would be disappointing to see this happen, and it certainly appears they're going for dramatic effect. I doubt many municipalities can afford this unless the owner's have accrued impound fees equal to the value of the car.

Sure street racing has a bad rap in California, and there is no doubt innocent people are getting hurt and killed because people are too stupid to take it to the track, but I think this story is terribly incomplete.

Well, bring on public hangings, that might prevent murder.
Why am I NOT surprised the first car crushed, is a Honda Civic, lol.

This is a stupid waste of resources and money. Instead of crushing the car, the state or city, once the accused are found guilty of the crime, should take the impounded car and auction it off. Destroying it is just a waste. The accused still looses his car, but the state can generate income by auctioning off the vehicle.

I'd think the municipalities would be against auctioning these cars back out into the public since they would be releasing these mod'ed cars back into the street to possibley race again. Besides, the lost income that they can get from auctioning these cars will just be made up through more tickets issued

Obviously more to this story...the shock value for the naive... Given the current smog laws...its' easy enough to enforce some changes to vehicle equipment. To control drivers and that right foot impulse...that's like trying to cease divorce and any multitude of lame things.

I dunno..taking peoples property away, and destroying it (even though they did race) it is a waste.
I don't street race, but it will always continue..because you can.

Another method to deter kids from street racing. Too many people are getting killed these days from illegal street racing.

No. That wouldn't work. Too much chance the original owner would try and track it down, wherever the new owner was, and steal it.

I don't like the idea of destroying people's property, but with some street racers, you have little choice. Driving, in all 50 states and D.C., is legally a priviledge, not a right. Street racing forefits one of that priviledge, and sometimes property as well.

I'm also in favor of mandatory jail terms for second offenders.

Well....not so fast.

A few cities here in North Texas WILL take your car. They dont crush it though. It either becomes property of the state, or they auction it off.

I know someone personally that this has happened to.

In other words, Legalized Theft. And there is nothing you can do to stop them, besides not race on the public streets.
