I did not know the SL 65's starting price was $187, 775

I love 65's as well, but in my humble opinion its the lack of differentiation that bothers me. For 185k you get a car that is otherwise identical to a 130k 55, or even worse a 90k 550 with a sport kit.
I think the best deal going that NO ONE pays attention to is the 600! Very similar engine, HUGE torque and with mods, very close to 65 territory!
Plus 600's can be had for a steal (well a comparable steal when the reference point is 185k)

Yep
D, if you got $200,000 to spend on a car, you're not thinking about buying the bargain basement Benz and then modding it to get it close to the big daddy SL65 output. If you got that kind of money, you're just gonna buy the big daddy and be done with it.
Again, when you're shopping for cars in the $200,000 range, you're purchase decision is slightly altered.

SL600 is more expensive than a 55, so I dont think I'd use the term "bargain basement" lol. Its not really about the "big daddy" benz at this point, its about the "what else can I get for THAT particular amount of money". A 180k SL is hard sell against a Gallardo, Aston, or Continental GT. I had a customer with a 600/AMG pack and BRABUS upgrades that considered the SL65 a waste, especially when the tanking resale value was considered (you can pick them up at about 120-130k EASY now).

I don't think we should paint those who can "easily afford" these cars with one broad brushstroke. Some will not go for them, thinking they can get more for the money elsewhere. Some will, thinking the prestige of owning the baddest-*** SL (or S, or CL, or what have you) is worth it. It's all good.
I do believe, however, that none of the above would buy them used. That's where you all swoop in.
