Wood Steering Wheel on a Luxury Sport Sedan - Yay or Nay?
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I thought I'd start this poll to see what you guys think about this nowadays. Do you think a wooden steering wheel belongs on a luxury sports sedan? I would say on a premium sedan that it is a nice feature as it adds some classiness to the interior design. However, the function of a Luxury Sports Sedan is a bit different and maybe an all leather wheel is a better option functionally. I kinda go back and forth with it, but I wanted to see what you all thought about it.

The funny thing is Europe gets all leather wheels, in America we get the wood. Funny but my GS 430 has all leather and I would prefer the wood/leather steering wheel.
Its not that serious. Me and like maybe 50 other people take their Lexus to the track. So that means 99.99999999% would not benefit from an all leather wheel.
320,000 owners a year> 50 of us nuts!! lol
I think its now a Lexus trait and I think its fabulous to see all these Lexus with wood wheels.

Luxury sport sedan, huh?
If it's meant to have some sportiness, then I say the steering wheel should be fully leather and have no wood on it whatsoever.
I often drive my girlfriend's RX 330, and my hands seem to glide over the wooden part of the steering wheel.
The feeling was definitely smooth and luxurious, but I wouldn't want that slippery texture when I'm doing some spirited driving.
Besides, the leather Lexus uses on their steering wheels is very soft, and still retains some of that luxurious feel.
So I say no to wood on steering wheels if it's a luxury SPORT sedan, but yes if it's just a luxury sedan.

There's nothing UN-sporty about wood....that is a modern-day fallacy that a lot of people have bought into....including, unfortunately, some auto manufacturers. You will find real wood steering wheels on most of your old classic British and Italian sports cars. You will also find wood-trim in a lot of the interiors and steering wheels of the 1960's-70's vintage muscle cars and sports coupes....cars like the GTO, Barracuda, Challenger, Cougar, etc.......

My RX300 doesn't have it, though I did put a wood trim kit in, but the wheel is still stock. For me, I like feeling leather all around given the way I drive, but I think it depends on the rest of the vehicle and/or interior if it looks good or not.

This is a "feature" that would and will keep me and my wife from buying a given car.
Wood steering wheels tend to be polished and while they may look good, are not conducive to controlling the car (hint, they are slippery).
Other car manufacturers add some wood to their wheels - only Lexus puts it almost everywhere on the wheel.
It is cold in the winter, HOT in the summer and slippery all the time .
Of course, I believe that Lexus recommends everyone consider putting Armorall on both their gas and brake pedals. Makes them look really good......

Just for comparisons sake
Interesting, this BMW sport wheel has it on the inside.
Volvo
Acura RL has a plastic wood wheel so not even gonna search that..
Interesting enough, I am sure some people have it as an option but I cannot find a RR or Bentley pic with a wood steering wheel.

Um Mike, I think that is a mighty old pic of the MB Interior.....I know that a steering wheel with wood inserts was available as an option on the old S-class - but I don't see it on the new one. Also note you were not forced to have the wood if you did not want it.
I did forget about the Volvo steering wheel however. Ugh, that one is terrible.
Also note that cars like the Infiniti do not put wood on the outside of the steering wheel.
