Toyota planning second hybrid brand
Sunday 24 June 2007
Toyota is planning to launch a second dedicated hybrid brand in 2009 that will be sold alongside the current Prius and is expected to sell up to 100,000 cars per year. The information comes from Japanese newspaper The Nikkei, which also confirmed that Toyota is hoping that by 2010 its hybrid sales will top one million units annually.
The Prius itself will also come in for a major update. Toyota will in fact be releasing three new hybrid vehicles labelled the Prius A, B, and C, with the new models due in 2009, 2010, and 2011 respectively. Each of the cars will be in different size categories with each model getting its own unique styling.
We’ve previously reported on Toyota’s ambitious hybrid plans. The carmaker is so confident about the technology that its VP in charge of powertrain development Masatami Takimoto has stated that by 2020, hybrids will be the standard drivetrain and account for “100 percent” of Toyota’s cars.

I'd like to see a Corolla Hybrid...the Prius, IMO, is just too geeky and unconventional. The original Civic Hybrid was nice, but the new one last year, like other Civics, got too geeky in the dash with the split-level displays..

Hmmmm, with all these Hybrid offerings (6 to date) what if Toyota decided to branch a 4th brand dedicated to just Hybrids?

The article that came out a few weeks ago stated that "Prius" would soon become a separate brand all on its own in addition to Toyota, Lexus, & Scion.
So if I'm not mistaken, going by this new article, they are considering a fifth brand in addition to those four, no?

Well they do own a small stake in Subaru now and from what Ive heard Subaru is sharing technology. Symmetrical AWD to Toyota. Hybrid Synergy Drive to Subaru. Hoping to see an Impreza hybrid soon so that I can buy it. 220 hp would be nice. Subaru was in the works with a Turbo parallel hybrid (TPH) but it appears that the project was cancelled a year ago. It was rumored to have 200 hp and average 40 mpg using Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru's parent) and NEC co developed Li-Ion batteries.

Nikkei: Toyota to offer new hybrid car by 2009
Reuters
Published on ZDNet News: June 25, 2007, 8:17 AM PT
Toyota Motor plans to put a new low-emission hybrid car on the market by 2009, following the international success of its Prius model, Nikkei Financial Daily said on Sunday.
The company is aiming for international sales of 100,000 units a year for the new model, contributing to a total target of 1 million hybrid cars a year in a few years' time, helped by stricter regulations on carbon dioxide emissions, the paper said.
About 310,000 hybrid cars, which combine electric motors with gasoline engines for better fuel efficiency, were sold around the world in 2006, with the Prius accounting for more than half, the Nikkei said.
Toyota has already begun developing the new model, which will have a 2- to 3-liter engine, compared with the 1.5-liter Prius. It will likely be manufactured at the Miyata plant on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, the Nikkei said.
Toyota, which currently offers seven models with hybrid technology, makes 90 percent of the hybrid vehicles sold in the domestic market, the Nikkei said.

With the sedans, if it's stored beneath, it'll be hard to access the battery that's why they're behind the rear seats.
What would be cool is if they design a slim battery so it goes the length of the cargo area (i.e. to the side of the trunk) rather than the width.
