BMW's decision to keep oil coolers out of non-zsp NA cars costs it a review. That's gotta hurt! Either way it's a well written review, performance margin is razor thin and the BMW couldn't stay cool. I believe the BMW won all the objective performance tests, but it's so close that the price difference and heat issues gave the G37 the win.

I want to say that is the 2nd 335 to overheat in a test? Didn't that happen in the Edmunds test? I could be wrong.
Like Dave said, 2 great cars. I am torn between which I prefer.

its about time bmw be held accountable for their "superior german engineering"
it reminds me of when the 3 went against the IS and the 3 won despite having tons of issues...

I am glad BMW lost (honestly). I love my car, and I think it's clear that the 335i is going to continue winning in the objective tests; but little things like oil coolers and fuel pumps show BMW is starting to rest on it's laurels. To think that someone at BMW actually thought it'd be a good idea to save a few bucks by omitting an oil cooler from just North American cars. I am glad to see them being taken to task for it.

Not surprised. After a weekend drive, I got the 335's temp gauge up to 250-260 and I didn't think I was driving it that hard. While it drives great, I frequently find myself swearing like a sailor at the I-Drive system.

Im not trying to be bias in any way, although yes i do own a 335, i still love g35/g37 and the bang for buck factor that it offers. I even considered the g35 for quite some time before i bought my 335.
Im one of the lucky ones that purchased a post march production steptronic 335 with sports package, which means i did get the extra oil cooler that the pre march production auto's with sports package didnt. After numerous hard runs, my temp never went a tick past 255f. I've never gone close to 270 or 280. IIRC, bmw stated that 300 is fine, but when you go past 300+, thats when the car will go into limp mode.
This was not intended to become a "Motortrend is a stupid magazine, i call BS my car never went into limp mode" or "My bmw is still better then a infiniti", more so a POV from a guy who has a 335 that does have a oil cooler.
Take it for what its worth.

FWIW, I have no oil cooler and have tracked my car now at least 8 times (I think 8 is right), the last time I did 14 laps in a row at Shannonville and the temp was stuck right on 140C (284F), which is where it always sits when I push it. I have not managed to overheat it or hit 300F+. Conditions that day were 37C which is almost 100F.
I know it is possible to overheat a 335i because I've seen it, but you do have to try to do it.

So can somebody describe a little better to me exactly the problem that occurred and was it on ALL 335i models made before a certain date or only some? Also after this march 'switch over' in production, was the problem fixed for ALL models or only some?
I'd be leasing if I got the 335i, though, so I wouldn't care too much unless it did it annoyingly often.
I wouldn't plan on tracking the car except maybe a trip or two to the 1/4-mile track for giggles...
I'm considering the G37 as well - but the lease rates have to be good...
