Japan June new vehicle sales fall for 24th straight month

Mon, Jul 2 2007, 05:53 GMT
http://www.afxnews.com

TOKYO (Thomson Financial) - Domestic sales of new cars, trucks and buses fell for the 24th straight month in June, with more Japanese consumers preferring to buy flat TVs and digital consumer goods than vehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said.

The drop in vehicle sales was also partly attributed to the increased use of cellular phones, which now accounts for the bulk of monthly fixed household costs in Japan.

The association said sales of new vehicles last month fell 11.2 percent year-on-year to 291,640 vehicles.

Car sales last month were down 9.5 pct year-on-year at 247,229, while sales of trucks fell 20.2 percent to 43,170 and bus sales dropped 1.4 percent to 1,241.

It was the third straight month that sales of all categories marked a year-on-year decline.

In the first half to June, sales of new vehicles fell 10.5 percent to 1.788 mln units, the second straight year that a decline was recorded in the first half.

Separately, the Japan Mini Vehicle Association reported that domestic sales of mini vehicles last month fell 6.1 percent from a year earlier to 170,526, the third straight monthly fall.

Mini-vehicle sales fell 1.7 percent to 1.05 mln in the six months to June, the first such fall in four years.

In June, vehicle sales fell in 10 out of 12 leading makers.

Japan's largest automaker Toyota Motor Corp reported a 12.9 percent drop in sales of standard-size cars to 124,281 vehicles, the tenth straight monthly fall, while second-ranked Nissan Motor Co reported a 6.3 percent fall in sales to 51,034 cars, the 21st consecutive month of fall.

However, sales of Toyota's high-end Lexus model shot up 57.6 percent to 2,957 cars.

Fifth-ranked Mazda Motor Corp saw sales drop 13.5 percent to 16,114 vehicles, falling for the 16th straight month, while at Fuji Heavy Industries, which makes Subaru brand cars, sales shrank 5.2 percent to 7,521 vehicles, the 23rd consecutive month of decline.

Bucking the trend was fourth-largest automaker Mitsubishi Motor Corp, whose sales rose 8.6 percent to 6,557 vehicles, the third straight monthly rise.

Suzuki also posted sales growth, with vehicle sales rising 8.6 percent to 6,892, the fifth rise in six months.

Truck sales at Japan's largest truck maker, Isuzu Motors Corp, fell 20.8 percent to 5,970 trucks, while sales at Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp declined 28.5 percent to 5,570 trucks.

Sales at Nissan Diesel Motor Co Ltd, now controlled by Volvo, dropped 39.7 percent to 1,171 vehicles, and at Hino Motors, a Toyota subsidiary, sales dropped 20.6 percent to 3,766.

In the mini-vehicle sector, sales at erstwhile industry leader Suzuki fell 4.6 percent to 50,086, while sales at rival Daihatsu rose 0.8 percent to 56,390.

As a result, Suzuki has fallen to the No. 2 spot with a 30.7 percent market share against new market leader Daihatsu's 32.4 percent.

Default Volkswagen Posts June Sales Increase Of Fifteen Percent

03 July 2007

VOLKSWAGEN POSTS JUNE SALES INCREASE OF FIFTEEN PERCENT

- Best Overall Month since August 2006
- Best GTI and Rabbit Months since Relaunch
- Best Passat Sedan Month since November 2006
- Jetta Sedan up 14.0 percent over June 2006

Auburn Hills, Mich. - Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced June 2007 sales of 23,127 units, representing an increase of 15.0 percent over the June 2006 total of 20,121. This performance reflects the best overall sales month for the Volkswagen brand since August 2006.

This increase can be attributed to strong market acceptance of the entry level Rabbit model, and a 44.9% surge in deliveries of the sporty GTI. The retractable hardtop convertible Eos posted its second best month ever, as summer is now in full swing.

Volkswagen sales performance for June of 2007 underscores the brand’s “return to its roots” affordability showing significant increases in Jetta and Rabbit volume car lines, combined with gathering momentum in spirited niche models like GTI and Eos.

Founded in 1955, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen is one of the world’s largest producers of passenger cars and Europe’s largest automaker. Volkswagen sells the Rabbit, New Beetle, New Beetle convertible, GTI, Jetta, GLI, Passat, Passat wagon, Eos, and Touareg through approximately 600 independent U.S. dealers.

Ford Retail Sales 'Edge' Higher in June as New, Redesigned Crossovers Soar

DEARBORN, Mich., July 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Soaring demand for
new and redesigned crossover vehicles, including the all-new Ford Edge,
"edged" Ford, Lincoln and Mercury retail sales to their first combined
increase since October 2006.

Edge sales were 12,470 and Lincoln MKX sales were 3,400. Edge was
recognized as the industry's top performing new vehicle in J.D. Power and
Associates' 2007 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout Study TM
(APEAL).

"These new crossovers are proof we are building more products people
want to buy," said Mark Fields, Ford's President of the Americas. "The Edge
and Lincoln MKX and other new and redesigned products are helping us to
stabilize our retail market share, a key goal in our plan to return to
profitability in North America."

The redesigned 2008 model Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner crossovers
set sales records in June, with Escape sales reaching 19,147, up 33 percent
from a year ago, and Mariner sales totaling 3,788, up 97 percent. In
addition, the Escape and Mariner hybrid models set June sales records, with
Escape hybrid sales of 2,192 and Mariner hybrid sales of 334.

In total, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury crossovers were up 83 percent
compared with a year ago as the company continues to achieve the largest
sales increase in the industry's fastest-growing segment.

Other new and redesigned products contributed to Ford's strong retail
performance in June. Retail sales for the Ford Expedition were higher than
a year ago, the full-size sport utility vehicle's tenth consecutive month
of sales increases.

June sales of Ford's F-Series, America's best-selling truck, were
essentially flat compared with a year ago, while sales of the Ford Focus
small car climbed 20 percent. A redesigned Ford Focus will debut later this
year.

The Lincoln brand posted its ninth month in a row of higher retail
sales. June sales were 30 percent higher than a year ago. In the first six
months of 2007, Lincoln sales were 15 percent higher than the same period a
year ago. Lincoln's rebound reflects the new Lincoln MKX crossover, the new
Lincoln MKZ sedan (up 38 percent in June), and the redesigned Navigator.
Land Rover dealers reported an 8 percent sales increase in June,
reflecting the addition of the all-new LR2 crossover.

The company's total sales (including sales to fleet customers) were
247,599, down 8 percent. The decline in total sales reflected a planned
reduction in sales to daily rental companies. Daily rental sales were down 39
percent (22,000 units) compared with a year ago. In the first half, sales to
daily rental companies were 89,000 units lower than a year ago (down 30
percent).
