Default Yet another BMW reliability thread: E34's?

Hey guys, most of you saw my thread a couple days ago about E28's reliability. Well now i'm looking at an 1989 E34. How reliable are these cars? Please just give me your most honest approach, I won't be offended

Buy it cheap and budget $ for maintenance. Seems like fuel & electrical systems are the Achilles heels of the E34; fuel injectors, fuel pumps, power window regulators & switches, sunroof motors. None of these items are inexpensive to replace, but if you're a do-it-yourselfer at least you can save a ton of dough on labor (the BMW dealer will rape you on an older car like this).

I always sort of liked the E34, but at the end of the day you're talking about an 18 year old BMW... definitely will be a project car unless you buy a meticulously maintained cream puff.

To be honest, it would scare the **** out of me... and I am a very mechanically inclined person.

If you must, I would look for a 93-95 (after minorchange). And have you looked at W124 or W201?? There are really nicely maintained ones out there sometimes for cheap.

I can't afford an 93-95 as of now. I just want a car for the summer until insurance money comes my way. Would you suggest I get an E28 instead? Same price.
