The LS runs much cleaner than the V-12s.
It is not saying the V-12s are bad, it is saying "there is ANOTHER way of doing things".
That is why Lexus is the most technologically advanced Japanese car brand.

Nah, its 20. and it gets 13 in the city.

Compared to other V12 cars which has always been its target market, I think 20mpg average is very good for the LS. And a NA V8 engine also gets about 20mpg average while weighing about 600-1000lbs less than the LS600h.

22mpg for the 760Li is the HIGHWAY ONLY mpg at best :
From : http://consumerguideauto.howstuffwor...7-series-1.htm
Similar results if you google : http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...G=Search&meta=
Test 760Li averaged 14.2 mpg overall, 20.8 mpg in mostly highway use.

In reviews, where they beat the cars like a dog that just chewed up the $4000 sofa? Not indicative of most peoples driving styles, nor the typical MPG that they will receive in normal driving. If BMW says that the 760 will return 22 MPG HWY, I believe it.
I can list many cars that I've owned which consistently returned much better mileage than what test drives told me that I would get. And better than what the window sticker told me I could expect. (Obviously, our ES is a rare and disappointing exception)
It makes sense that fewer cylinders will burn less fuel. But we're still talking about 22 MPG here. Making the car out to be a friend of environment is just silly. The car is all about excess. more! more! more!

you've pointed out 1 engine per car company and those cars are sold in a select number of states by law.
So no most cars do not meet the LS600h's SULEV rating.
most importantly the only reason car companies sell PZEV vehicles is to avoid selling electric cars in California.

People wanted a V-12 option, and Lexus provided that "with a twist."
Now that they did, critics cry that "It isn't good enough." There will be a lot of people that will be extremely happy with the 600h, and there will be a lot of people what will be extremely disappointed with the 600h.
All in all, the LS600hL (along with all other hybrids) is "good." It is the consumers' decision whether or not it is "good enough."

The BMW 328 (in all its different forms) are only sold in select states? How about the Ford Focus?

Still burns a lot of gas, which doesn't match up at all to the phrase "takes less from the world".
And check out the list of cars with a PZEV rating, which is even better than SULEV here
The site says that it only lists cars with a PZEV rating or better. The list of SULEV vehicles is probably even greater.
I think you should adjust your comment that "it is far cleaner than most cars on the road."

ff, you're missing the point. Sure there are quite a few SULEV and PZEV vehicles out there, but they're all 4 cyl or 6 cyl engines, with a few hybrid variants. How many vehicles out there on the market today have 400HP+ and are rated SULEV, or how many V8 powered vehicles are rated SULEV?
That is what makes the LS hybrid so special. And considering it's got AWD, and that it's rated using the 2008 EPA methodology, i'd say it's fuel economy ratings of 20/22 are VERY good for a large luxury car with over 400HP.
It's also silly to compare the LS hybrid to the LS460/L at this time, which the NY Times article did. The LS460/L is rated using the 2007 EPA ratings. Under the 2008 EPA rating system, it's mileage figures will drop, and will make the LS hybrid's ratings seem even better then they do right now.
