Porsche To Slash Cayenne's Fuel Consumption With Hybrid Model
Porsche will come out with a hybrid version of the Porsche Cayenne at the end of 2009. It will cut fuel consumption by nearly one-third. Pictured: 2008 Cayenne.
WEISSACH, Germany — The EPA ranks the 2008 Porsche Cayenne near the bottom of the list, or "worst," when it comes to fuel economy. The '08 Cayenne gets 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. But Porsche on Monday said it plans to cut the average fuel consumption of the Cayenne by nearly a third when it brings out a hybrid version at the end of 2009.
Porsche is targeting 26.8 mpg for its Cayenne hybrid, according to Reuters. The impetus for the move comes from Europe's stringent carbon dioxide guidelines. Porsche is working with Volkswagen and Audi to develop hybrids that capture energy from braking.
Porsche said it would roll out a hybrid version of the Panamera coupe. It has no plans for hybrid versions of the Boxster/Cayman or 911.
What this means to you: Your future Cayenne hybrid won't be as much of a gas hog as the one you've got now.

I went over to a Porsche/Audi dealer last week and was talking to one of their senior mechanics while picking up a part for an Audi my uncle was working in on and he was commenting that with the Cayenne the #1 customer complaint is gas mileage. It is in single digits here at this high altitude and poor gas.

sounds good. I wonder if they can pull off a hybrid and an offroader. We know the HiHy and the RXh can't go serious offroading. I'm sure the Cayenne is capable once you get some proper tyres.
