997 carrera s vs. z06 ???

Close call, but personally I would pick the Z06, for the raw performance & better styling (for me).
I know the Porsche will have better quality & prestige(I don't care much for that), but you can't beat the looks/performance combination of the Z06 at that price range.

I'll take the Z06. Both for the raw, obscene power as others have mentioned above, as well as interior room. I haven't tried to sit in a 997, but couldn't come even remotely close to fitting comfortably in a 996. I assume the 997 isn't much bigger. The C5/C6 fits my 6'5" frame nicely.

My concern is my 260 lb 6'4" frame in a 997. I hear american cars aren't up to par with the quality as foreign automakers but it could it be that bad? I am concerned with the quality and overall package. Are there any issues with the new z06??

I have a 2006 Corvette (not a Z06 though). Your concerns about quality depend on what your priorities are. If you want a car that won't cost you an arm and a leg to maintain, I'm 99% sure you'll be better off in the Vette. They're not flawless, but the majority of the common problems Vette owners have are not that serious, and not that expensive to fix. I've heard maintaining Porsches after warranty is a nightmare. Then again, you'll have to take your car to a Chevy dealership, and Chevy dealerships aren't always known for their excellent customer service
As far as quality of interior materials go, I have never sat in a 911, but most people don't think the Vette's interior is up to the 911 standard. Keep in mind the Z06 has almost the exact same interior as a base $45k-$50k Vette, and probably won't be able to compete with a car costing well over $100k as far as interior materials are concerned. There is a new leather wrapped interior options you can order on Corvettes for 2008, but I don't think the new interiors have been put into production yet, so there isn't really much feedback out there. I really couldn't care less about interior material quality, so I'm not the best one to talk to on this subject. Interior layout is another issue however, and I love the layout of the Vette interior.

Z06 all the way. Everyone knows about the torque/power, but what most people don't know is the amazing EPA fuel economy ratings for the 7.0l V8.
Z06 has a comfortable (to me) driving position. I've never sat in a 997, but from what I've read, the seating position is I also like having a place to rest my elbow when I'm shifting, which I don't think the 997 does.

Z06, especially since the 07's have had a redampening of their suspension. Plus I like a good deal and I think you get so much for (relatively) so little with the Z06.
I guess it boils down to which you like more, power or handling. The Z06 has power in spades. As for the Porsche, after 40+ years of refinement it's hard to beat in the handling department. And if you want both, you have to cough up mad money for the 911 Turbo.
