2009 Toyota Corolla details including new engines

The new 2009 Toyota Corolla should go on sale in early 2008, according to Automotive News, and we'll get our first look at the car this November at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. There will be quite a few changes, most noticeably a new "edgier" design. But when we take a look under that racier hood, we're likely to see even more changes. The newest Corolla will reportedly feature Toyota's new family of 1.8-liter engines, which should first show up in the 2008 Scion xD. Expect a very slight bump in power here, with 128 hp and 125 ft-lbs of torque, versus 126 hp and 122 ft-lbs. of torque for the current model. There will also be a second engine choice for uplevel Corolla models. The larger engine will be the 2.4-liter four from the Camry producing 158 hp. That will bring the Corolla's power output closer to the competition and might put to rest rumors of a possible V6, although we still think the car will be generally underpowered compared to its competition if Toyota doesn't raise the output of the 2.4L somehow.
The Corolla is already the best-selling car of all time, but Toyota needs to rethink things a bit to keep up with competitors like the Honda Civic and Mazda3. The new car might be sold alongside the 2008 version of the current car for a few months and will likely roll out as a 2009 or possibly a 2008.5.

I hope its nicer then the last model. Even my 98 ES seemed better than it and its a 98 while the rental Corolla was 06. We had one for a rental while on vacation and it was repulsive. The backseat was hard, the seats were not powered in the front. The engine was very annoying, it also had no power. The buttons had no light. The inside was all plastic, even the Sienna is better then it. Why do people even buy this car its disgusting. I would recommend the Corolla to no one. I cant believe it sells well. Did I mention that its noisy and rides rough.
It looks better now, hope the Speedo is NOT in the center like on the Yaris. Why do the car companies even put in the middle. dumb idea. Toyota seems to be getting alot better though and more par on the interior.

Comparing a Corolla to a Lexus and a Sienna isn't too fair. The Sienna is twice the price of the Corolla.
And people buy it because it is the most reliable, dependable car you can buy and you get 40 MPG. An attractive combo.

Edgier styling?! Edgier than what? A loaf of bread?
It looks like a big Yaris. I think the powertrain choices could be better. The base specs mentioned will be behind the competition, and the uplevel one seems a bit big. 2.4 litres is bit on the big side, although I suppose Toyota just dug into the parts bin and put the Camry engine there. I still like how Honda gets 140hp out of a 1.8 litre engine.

Another "accurate" story by Autoblog .
That pic is the Toyota Auris sold in Europe, and it's also sold as a Corolla in a few markets like Australia.
But there is NO guarantee the USDM Corolla will look like that.
Let's all just wait a few months until Toyota officially shows the USDM Corolla before we jump to conclusions.
Also regarding the engine choices, rumour is that we will get a 2.0L engine for the new Corolla. Not sure if that is in addition to a 1.8, 2.4, or 3.5L V6.

People worry too much about more power. A primary concern and selling point for Corolla (and just about every car in this segment) is fuel economy.
The new Corolla will have to match or preferably beat today's 40 MPG Corolla.
Why are people wanting a race car?

The xD doesn't have a center speedo like the xA did. The new xB with the center speedo is much better designed than the last.
What happened to the talk about the valvematic engine?

The TRUE reason....once you cut through all the B.S.? What else?.....Money. It is easier and cheaper to make a dash like this for both left and right-hand drive models for different markets.
