Spy Shots: BMW 1-series cabrio

Posted on Wednesday 8 August 2007

Several prototypes of BMW’s 1-series cabriolet have been spotted undergoing testing across Germany ahead of the car’s likely unveiling at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. As the images reveal, the new car will stick with a traditional fabric roof and will feature a revised tail-end to accommodate the folding mechanism.

Expect the new cabrio to feature the same powerplants as the recently launched coupe, which means several BMW engines ranging from a 177hp 2.0L turbodiesel up to the 306hp twin-turbocharged 3.0L straight-six in the flagship 135ci. Some of the new features that will carry over from the coupe include direct injection and Bi-VANOS valve timing technology as well as BMW’s new Efficient Dynamics fuel saving tech.

The new drop-top will join the coupe and older hatchback in the 1-series range when it goes on sale later this year. The car will also be sold in North America but it’ll be limited to just the two models, a 125ci and 135ci.

Even if it is a cheap BMW I think it's too ugly and I'd rather buy something from a non-luxury brand.

That rear is just so aweful

Ahem, I don't think there's no need to cover the steering wheel emblem up

Spy Shots: BMW 135i Convertible

Posted on: August 20th, 2007

BMW hopes that the 1-Series coupe along with the introduction of a convertible variant in the U.S., will boost the 1-Series range past the half million mark. The BMW 1-Series coupe arrives in April of 2008 followed by the 135i convertible which will be available in SE and M Sport trim levels.

From these latest spy shots from our friends at CarMagazine, it seems that the BMW 1-Series convertible will get a fabric roof rather than a hard-top convertible. Expect the 135i convertible to weigh significantly more than the 135i coupe to ensure handling. Of course the 0-60 time will increase to under six-seconds.

CarMagazine says it expects the 135i convertible to be followed by the 125i convertible as well as a 123d twin-turbo diesel for the UK.
