CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — As they say, you can't pay for this kind of publicity. On Wednesday, BMW got to make the link in a big way between space flight and its hydrogen-powered luxury sedan, which is based on the BMW 760Li.
The German automaker was allowed to park a BMW Hydrogen 7 next to the mega-Roman candle that's the Space Shuttle Endeavour and get a memorable picture. The image commemorates the end of an eight-week test period during which BMW says "NASA personnel" got to drive a fleet of BMW Hydrogen 7s. BMW did not spell out whether or not the aforementioned personnel were the astronauts who were due to blast off Wednesday in Endeavour.
The fleet was "conveniently refueled using the space center's liquid hydrogen fueling supply located on the space center's premises," BMW said in a statement. The shuttle also uses liquid hydrogen.
The BMW Hydrogen 7 is outfitted with an internal-combustion engine that can run on either liquid hydrogen or gasoline. The V12 churns out 260 horsepower, and the top speed of the Hydrogen 7 is 143 mph. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph is 9.2 seconds. When the Hydrogen 7 is driving in hydrogen mode, it emits only water vapor.
What this means to you: BMW is hoping for some powerful mental associations as you study the image of the Endeavour and its alt-fuel flagship.
