It was a classic, but I definitely would stay away from the rotary
engines. As pointed out RX-7 horror stories and the fact that they
have to recall all those RX-8's.

"RotaryNews.com has confirmed that there will be a recall on the 2004, 2005 and some 2006 Mazda RX-8s. Not every RX-8 will need a new engine, only those that fail a series of tests, including a new vacuum test."

LOL, a vacuum test...

The RX-7 was one of my favorite cars. I test drove one a few years back and was very impressed by the acceleration and handling. I almost got one but the rotary problems scared me off as well as how small the car was and how little room there was. The last gen Mazda Cosmo is my favorite rotary car but unfortunately it did not make it to the states. It could be had with a twin turbo 3 rotor with over 300hp and was more of a sports luxury car. The last RX-7 is probrably the most focused sports car mazda will ever build. Hopefully they figure out how to make those rotaries reliable for a new RX-7 which is rumored to be in the works.

Although I heard the rotory engines are a pain in the behind, the body styling is very well done. I saw a stock white one the other day and it caught my eye as soon as I saw it.

i looove that car! but just like everybody, what scares me is reliability. the engine needs to be rebuilt about every 60,000 miles. and its difficult to find a rotary specialist. i had a buddy that was a mazda tech that worked mainly on rotaries... he charged 6 grand for each swap/rebuild. he still currently has an original FD with 130 original miles and at one point had an FD in every single color. eventually i plan on buying one as a weekend/pleasure driving car but i would never daily drive one.

p.s. i love the yellow mica color!

The FD is certainly one of the best Japanese cars from the 90s. Probably my second favorite after the NSX. It's no surprise there is such a hugh following for these cars. The size and styling still have stood the test of time and they are still sought after.

I'm a rotary convert and am really enjoying my RX-8. Here she is.....

Have to admit those rotories are great when working. My sister had a 88 that I used to drive sometimes in HS. Man that was a blast. Too bad she gave it to her ex when they broke up.

I bought my 1 owner 93 FD in 99, put 30K on it over the next 4 years (2 of those years as a daily driver) with no engine issues at all. While there are many stories of rotary engine failures, it has been my experience that if you maintain the FD properly, it can be a very reliable car. No other car I have ever driven was as fun to drive. Lightweight, high revving motor with twin turbos, it ALWAYS left a smile on my face! My wife actually teared up as it was loaded into an enclosed transport to be delivered to the new owner after we sold it in July of 2003

Here are some pics. Mine was lightly modded, suspension, brakes, wheels, tires, motor, etc....

My friend Tony's, one of the sickest FDs known IMO:

It's gone through so many transformations.
