In China, you are either a regualr Joe making barely enough for living, or you are super rich. one of my firend in China, she got a brand new 2005 Mercedes S600 on her 18th years old birthday, and now she is 20 years old and going through her 3 rd Benz, and in charge of a big construction company.

A lot of it is the perception, the Chinese are generally American copycats, than European. Yes, there is some animosity towards the Japanese. But they do their own research, too. Hence they copy Japanese cars, they do not want to buy it, just copy it!

Having frequented (almost lived there essentially) China in the past few years, there is no "stigma" or animosity towards japanese cars in China, if you belive otherwise you have no clue of their present modern culture. In fact, one of the most popular "affordable" (meaning in the $40k USD range) is the JDM Toyota Camry. Since the social demographic of china is 80% poor, 15% median income, and 5% ultra rich combined with the fact a license fees are outrageous ($5k USD for a license and another $5k for a license plate in popular cities), most that can afford cars in general like to flaunt it. IMHO, this study is pretty meaningless.

That is absolutely mindblowing! $10,000 US Dollars just for license and registration?? Given that, I guess now we can really use car sales as an economic indicator in China. Granted there seems to be a large economic gap between classes (as in many many countries in the world), but there are still enough people in the country making enough to simply pay enough to OPERATE the car, not to mention the price of the actual car.

Toyota Corolla sold 7,049 units in Chinese market in July, outperforming all competitors in China's A segment market, according to a company official.

No wonder Chinese people are not so happy in general. There needs to be more balance in terms of wealth possession among the rich and poor.
