My favorite tid-bit from the above article? The fact that his Volvo has NEVER been garaged. It has been his DD for 41 years and has ALWAYS braved the elements!

It's sort of funny, he laments the fact that Volvo won't help him with an occasional free case of oil filters, but in 1987 (at 1 million miles) they gave him a Volvo 780 Bertone Coupe... then when he passed the two million mile mark, Volvo gave him a C70.
Of course, today the 780 is probably worth $1500, and the C70 is probably worth $5000

Quite remarkable.
Old Volvo's have certainly proven there superior longevity. I still see a bunch of mid 80's models (a lot of wagons for some reason) on the road.
A guy I work with has one with 275,000 miles on it. He's the only one at work with more miles than I have on my SC.
You have to wonder though how much he has spent on maintainance and repairs on this P1800 over 41 years. He surely could of bought several new cars over the years with that money.
He has created fame and many experiences because of this car but in a way he has been a slave to this car. Has it been worth it?

Absolutely incredible!
The owner seems fanatical about maintaining the car and from the article it sounds like he drives the car very delicately. A lot of parts and pieces of the car have been replaced or rebulit which takes away from the achievement a little bit.
To be honest, after reading the article this achievement seemed not as amazing as when I read the thread title, but nonetheless shows the how well certain cars can hold up if maintained at an almost fanatical level and driven with very high care.

I wonder if Lexus would give me a car if I reached 1,000,000 miles on my ES 300?

I've owned 3 Volvos in my life....a 1970 145, a 1980 240 and a 1989 740. All great cars! And, especially with the older ones, absolutely bulletproof! In my early years of car ownership, I was not the greatest with routine maintenance. I lived with the assumption that the oil light came on when it was time to add oil! Yes, before you thrash me wildly, I've grown up since then and am now meticulous with maintenance of my SC.
I sold the 145 with about 198,000 on it. The guy who bought it took it to California and back (from West Virginia)....twice. He put at least another 50-60,000 on it before I lost touch with him. It wouldn't surprise me if it was still running.
