Default AUGUST 2007 Vehicles Sales

Edmunds.com Reports True Cost of Incentives for August: Automakers Spend More Carefully, Less Generously

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, estimated today that the average automotive manufacturer incentive in the U.S. was $2,362 per vehicle sold in August 2007, down $159, or 6.3 percent, from July 2007, and up $51, or 2.2 percent, from August 2006.

Edmunds.com's monthly True Cost of IncentivesSM (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers' various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.

According to Edmunds.com, combined incentives spending for domestic manufacturers averaged $3,293 per vehicle sold in August 2007, down from $3,393 in July 2007. From July to August, European automakers decreased incentives spending by $307 to $2,976 per vehicle sold; Japanese automakers decreased incentives spending by $239 to $1,196 per vehicle sold; and Korean automakers increased incentives spending by $153 to $1,910 per vehicle sold.

In August, the industry's aggregate incentive spending is estimated to have totaled approximately $3.34 billion, essentially unchanged from July. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors spent an aggregate of $2.25 billion, or 67.2 percent of the total; Japanese manufacturers spent $668 million, or 19.9 percent; European manufacturers spent $291 million, or 8.7 percent; and Korean manufacturers spent $139 million, or 4.2 percent.

"It is unusual for incentives spending to fall from month to month this time of year, as manufacturers typically offer generous deals in order to clear old inventory," stated Jesse Toprak, Executive Director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "This year the domestic automakers are staying true to their value pricing strategy and carefully picking and choosing where to offer marketing support, rather than blanketing the whole line-up with incentives."
Code:
True Cost of Incentives for the "Big Six" Automakers

Automaker August 2007 July 2007 August 2006

Chrysler Group $3,758 $4,372 $2,909
Ford $3,145 $2,959 $3,363
General Motors $3,215 $3,299 $2,920
Honda $1,056 $1,272 $1,259
Nissan $2,191 $2,371 $2,396
Toyota $849 $1,153 $710
Among vehicle segments, large trucks had the highest average incentives, $4,349 per vehicle sold, followed by large SUVs at $3,947. Compact cars had the lowest average incentives per vehicle sold, $873, followed by sport cars at $1,037. Analysis of incentives expenditures as a percentage of average sticker price for each segment shows large trucks averaged the highest, 13.7 percent, followed by large cars at 11.9 percent of sticker price. Luxury sports cars averaged the lowest, 3.4 percent, followed by sports cars at 3.6 percent of sticker price.

"The compact car segment is clearly the one to watch," commented Edmunds' AutoObserver.com Senior Editor Michelle Krebs. "Every automaker that doesn’t have a successful entry in this hot segment should be looking to build one."

Comparing all brands, in August Mini spent the least – virtually nothing, followed by Scion at $86 per vehicle sold. At the other end of the spectrum, Saab spent the most, $6,732, followed by Cadillac at $6,177 per vehicle sold. Relative to their vehicle prices, Saab and Jeep spent the most, 20.1 percent and 14.6 percent of sticker price, respectively, while Mini spent virtually nothing and Scion spent just 0.5 percent.

Toyota's incentives dropped below $1000 and that is mainly attributed to the drop in Tundra incentives for August.

Rabbit and Eos post continued gains

DEARBORN, Mich., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Demand continues to
grow for Ford Motor Company's all-new and redesigned crossover vehicles,
but overall sales declined in August.

Total August sales were 218,332, down 14 percent compared with a year
ago. Sales to daily rental companies were down 44 percent and sales to
individual retail customers were down 13 percent.

Ford, Lincoln and Mercury's all-new and redesigned crossover utility
sales were up 82 percent in August and up 48 percent year-to-date - the
largest increase of any major manufacturer.

"We are encouraged by consumers' response to our new products," said
Mark Fields, Ford's President of the Americas. "Demand for our new
crossovers continues to grow despite challenging economic conditions."

In August, Ford Edge sales were 10,165 and Lincoln MKX sales were
3,421. The Edge and Lincoln MKX were introduced in December 2006 and
already are among the best sellers in the mid-size and premium CUV
segments.

Sales for the redesigned 2008 model Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner
crossovers were higher in August. Escape sales were 11,960, up 4 percent,
and Mariner sales were 2,939, up 6 percent.

Sales for the new Ford Expedition (up 17 percent) and Lincoln Navigator
(up 57 percent) also were higher than a year ago. Expedition sales were up
for the twelfth consecutive month.

The Lincoln brand posted its eleventh month in a row of higher retail
sales. In August, total Lincoln sales were up 16 percent (retail up 17
percent). Year-to-date, total Lincoln sales were up 13 percent (retail up
14 percent). Lincoln's rebound reflects the new Lincoln MKX crossover, the
new Lincoln MKZ sedan and the redesigned Navigator.

Land Rover dealers reported record August sales of 4,853, up 32
percent, reflecting the addition of the all-new LR2 crossover. Land Rover
sales were up 6 percent year-to-date.

North American Production
In the fourth quarter 2007, the company plans to produce 640,000
vehicles, up 6 percent compared with the fourth quarter 2006. In the third
quarter 2007, the company plans to produce 640,000 vehicles, unchanged from
the previous forecast.

"Our plan remains to align production capacity and inventories with
consumer demand," said Fields. "Our second half production is in line with
this thinking."

Chrysler LLC Announces Overall August 2007 U.S. Sales Down 6 Percent, but Retail Up

- Chrysler brand car sales rise 25 percent year-over-year led by Sebring
Sedan and Convertible
- Jeep(R) brand sales down 1 percent versus August 2006 while Wrangler and
Compass sales increase 58 and 76 percent respectively
- Dodge brand car sales up 13 percent from the same period last year
- Dealer inventory down 11 percent from August 2006, approximately 57,000
units

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Sept. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler LLC reported U.S.
sales for August 2007 of 168,203 units; down 6 percent compared to August
2006 with 179,165 units sold. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.
"Overall, the industry experienced softer sales in August than a year
ago," said Darryl Jackson, Vice President - U.S. Sales. "Our fleet sales
are down more than 20 percent versus August 2006. While this has driven the
overall sales decrease for the month, it is directly in line with the
company's Recovery and Transformation Plan to reduce sales of our daily
rental fleet during the second half of the year."

Chrysler brand car sales were led by Sebring Sedan which posted sales
of 4,929 for August, up 66 percent over the prior month. Chrysler Sebring
Convertible finished the month with sales of 2,730 units improving 8
percent over July. Chrysler Aspen sales also rose 62 percent versus July
with 3,599 units, posting its best month ever.

The Jeep(R) brand was down 1 percent versus last year while Wrangler
and Compass posted gains over August 2006. Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler
Unlimited posted sales of 9,464 units, up 58 percent compared to August
2006 with 6,002 units sold. The Jeep Compass finished the month with sales
of 3,625 units, up 76 percent from last year.

Dodge brand car sales increased 13 percent over last year led by Dodge
Caliber which posted a gain of 5 percent. Dodge truck sales were down 14
percent over August 2006. The all-new Dodge Nitro was up 51 percent over
July 2007.

"Our exciting new 2008 models combined with the new Chrysler Lifetime
Powertrain Warranty continues to drive showroom traffic and contributed to
stronger closing rates in August," said Michael Keegan, Vice President -
Volume Planning and Sales Operations. "Chrysler will continue to support
2007 model year close-out with a highly competitive 0% APR into September."

Chrysler finished the month with 446,249 units of inventory, or a
72-day supply. Inventory is down by 11 percent compared to August 2006 when
it was at 502,946 units.
