there isnt much to explain, the flagship sedan needs to be stronger than the rest. Just because the last GS400 was higher than the LS400 isnt a good enough reason nor a convincing argument that it should be. Who knows if the engine was actually derated, it couldve been derated "on paper" and it could still be the 380 hp engine, just on paper it says its 342

The GS is the "performance luxury sedan" of Lexus. I, along with many other Lexus enthusiasts STRONGLY feel the GS DOES need to have better performance than the LS. The LS is the flagship of the Lexus brand NOT because of HP or performance, but because of the total package that it offers.
Fact is, HP and performance is a BIG deal for the GS since it's intended (by Lexus) to be the performance midsize luxury sedan.
If the engine is underrated and the "342HP" number is purely for marketing purposes, then I'll be fine with that (it would make the GS460 a bit of a sleeper). The LS will have the marketing advantage of higher HP on paper, while the GS will still have the actual performance of the 380HP engine. But this is a big IF at this point and nothing more than a hopeful guess.
The GS press materials contradict themselves in that in some places it mentions the GS460 has the D4-S system, while in other places it makes no mention of D4-S (or direct injection). Even if the engine is detuned, it still NEEDS to have the D4-S there in place, because if it doesn't that will affect the marketing and ultimately the brand reputation of Lexus.
The best we can hope for right now is that the GS460's engine is identical to the LS460 other than having paper specs of "342HP".

It's not that. Toyota Motor Corporation controls what Lexus USA does, not Lexus Japan controlling Lexus USA. Lexus (worldwide) is a subsidiary of TMC.
