BMW 1 Series to start under $30,000, says report
When it goes on sale in the spring, the BMW 1 Series will start slightly under $30,000 for a 128i model powered by BMW's 230-horse, 3.0-liter inline-six, according to an Automotive News report. The 300-horsepower twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six 135i will start in the mid-$30,000s. The 135i is expected to sprint from 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds, with the 128i being a second slower. Only the coupe will be available upon launch, and there's no word on when BMW plans to introduce the sedan and hatchback.
Depending on the final price, the 1 Series will be $5000 to $6000 cheaper than the comparable 3 Series coupe.
According to 1 Series product manager Falko Rodomski, the 1 Series isn't a "small, cheap BMW" like the ill-fated 318ti, but rather a "small premium car," indicating the 1 Series will come loaded with most of the features seen throughout BMW's lineup. The German automaker hopes to capture younger buyers and win customers from mainstream automakers.
There's been much buzz surrounding the car's arrival, and BMW says 96,000 people have already signed up to receive information about the car via its 1 Series microsite.

Just like I thought, it will be priced BELOW 30K. Good going BMW, yet another decision that will dilute the BMW brand and tarnish it's reputation .
As SICK mentioned, the only saving grace is no 4 cyl engines for North America.

I disagree. Base engine at 230hp is good enough for 6.1 seconds in the 328 with a stick (according to C&D). While this is not going to set your hair on fire, it is more than enough to get out of its own way. Combined with a good fuel economy (no turbo), it is not a bad choice. You get a drifting machine, with either engine. For the money (with no options), the 135i is going to be tough to beat for going fast. I hope that STI and Evo give it some competition, though.
Also, VW might come out with R36 or R38 to match or better 135i's thrust.
