BMW expects the 1-series to lure enthusiasts back into the fold
Posted Jun 4th 2007 11:24AM by Damon Lavrinc
There has been considerable debate among enthusiasts as to whether or not BMW is living up to its "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan. A lot has changed since the 2002 was introduced in the late 60s, but BMW is looking to stoke the flames of physics enthusiasts, beginning with the importation of the 1-series to the U.S.
A recent article in Automotive News contends that BMW is well aware of its waning performance image, especially in the realm of compact vehicles. The 3-series can hardly be considered an entry-level ride anymore, and the upcoming 1-series may be able to fill the niche that its big brother has abandoned.
Rich Brekus, the G.M. of product planning and strategy for BMW's N.A. operations, is quoted as saying that the 1-series, "is the purest BMW we have." He goes on to point out that BMW's driving dynamics are what won people over in the past, and it would be a shame to let the next generation down.
The 1-series will supposedly go on sale in the States next year, with both a two-door and a convertible being offered. We're getting anxious and it sounds like we have good reason.

If it has all/most of the driving dynamics of a 3-series, good power and response, and is simply less expensive because it's a smaller overall car, then I certainly would consider buying one.
Especially if they manage to create one with great mileage.

If drives and behaves similarly to the Audi A3 we tested a few weeks ago, I'd be happy to buy it. I hope they offer a diesel version..........that'd be a terrific commute car/daily driver.

I would rather get a Golf if I were choosing between the two mostly cause I probably don't see myself owning more than two cars (if I'm single) so I'll have to "compromise".... but hey, that 135i could do it for ya!

Well, with increasing competition in the entry level sports sedan market, BMW could afford to keep making the 3 series as lackluster as it used to be, so they really upped everyone with the new turbocharged engine. Even though it's yet to prove itself in reliability department, because in the past high power BMW engines were very unreliable, but there's no denying that 335 is a blast, although it still looks like a turd. In any case, BMW can't allow people to finally get what they are paying for, so they need to make a turd, slap a BMW badge onto it, and sell it for a premium price. Can't wait to see this hideous POS hit the dealers, and sell for double the price of a Corolla while offering less performance and everything else.
