To me, it doesn't matter if the Veyron is governed. The high speed record is the high speed record. It's a huge marketing banner to say you are the world land speed holder. That's gotta attract a few more millionaires.
Plus, I think it looks better. Sleeker and long. I like the Veyron but it's kinda bulbous.

It's true that it's electronically limited to 253mph, however I've heard that the theoretical top speed is 257 mph... only 4mph higher. What is your source for 279 mph? If you watch it on top gear it takes quite a while to hit 253 mph.. that last little stretch it is really pushing it to make it there. Asking for 26 more mph at that kind of speed is just not possible based on what I saw.
Either way, the point is that if Bugatti really wanted to, they could beat this so-called "record" set by the Aero SSC. 253mph is not the true top speed of the Veyron.
