MAINZ, Germany — The hot-rodders in Mercedes' AMG tuner division have not only had their eyes on rival BMW's hardware — they've also taken note of the company's popular factory tour program.
European delivery arrangements give Europhile American customers an excuse to visit the continent and a car to tour in, and they help cement customer loyalty by letting visitors watch cars as they are built.
Many of AMG's customers have expressed a desire to visit the company's Affalterbach, Germany headquarters and factory outside Stuttgart, and the company is mulling ways to accommodate them, reported Mario Spitzner, AMG's director of marketing and sales. "We have been working on a factory tour in Affalterbach for awhile," he said. "We are starting slowly because the demand would be more than we could handle."
Perhaps AMG's touted "one man, one motor," assembly philosophy is more sensitive to distraction than traditional assembly line manufacturing.
What this means to you: You will soon be able to peek in on the AMG manufacturing process, maybe even see the company's master craftsmen build your car.
