It's an entry level 'sports' car, who cares about being green. That's what the vanilla corolla sedan and prius hybrids are for.
Read the interview in the link. It will be just fine. Other automakers use it, It won't be an issue.

There was a nasty rumor a couple weeks back that the FT-86 design was scrapped for a crappier design. Well if it has, then the senior designer at the Toyota design studio which designed the original FT-86 concept's design doesn't even know about it.

Here's the Q&A with him:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=413

Article also indicates that the production version will be coming to Geneva!!
I detect much win in this sector, captain.

But to be fair, it really states that it will be confirmed for production at Geneva, which as you know in the automotive world does not at all mean they will actually SHOW the production version at Geneva. Although I am hopeful they will.

But if they don't, I won't be too terribly disappointed. I predict the following timeline based on what we know so far:

Geneva 2010: Confirmation of production, possible reveal of production model.

LA 2010: DEFINITE reveal of the production model, if it does not take place at Geneva.

New York 2011: US pricing, specs, options, etc. detailed.

Late summer/early fall 2011: On sale as a 2012 model, at least in Japan. Will show up in the US no later than Q1 2012.

GAWDDDD THIS HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING!

In other news, I also called BS on all of these recent "surprise buttsecks redesign" rumors. I mean people will turn into sheep and believe anything. Why on earth would a company, especially Toyota, debut a concept that looks pretty close to being to production-ready, receive a positive response, and then do a rapid about-face for NO APPARENT REASON?

The Autocar video had the designer stating that Akio Toyoda himself personally loves the FT-86 design, so I suspect that that concept design indeed has the greenlight for production. Hopefully much will be retained...

...now for the guessing game. What will the production vehicle be called? Corolla AE86? Celica?

Well beating up Toyota was always cool on the internet and with everything going on everyone wants to bring the next bad news about Toyota.

I mean common sense indicates public reaction was overwhelmingly positive, WHY would they stray far from it.

Sadly common sense is far too uncommon.

I have personally redesigned the FT-86, and it will be recalled by Toyota in the future for unintended awesomeness.

Let the blogs have fun with that one. I mean it's on the internetz, so is haz to be true!

I'm betting Celica or something completely new.

Toyota might just go with AE86. They went with LF-A, didn't they?

The AE86 was a chassis id not a model. They aren't gonna call it a corolla either. That'd be just retarded.

I hope for a real name though, enough with the Alpha-numeric naming schemes.

How about Levin? Oh no, that's too close to lemon.

Trueno had flip up lights, Levin had fixed lights, if you follow the ae86 nomenclature.

Default Toyota FT-86 at 2010 geneva autoshow. Production version to be introduced early 2012.

Posted today on ft86club

The FT-86 was introduced today at geneva autoshow and it was said that the production car will be introduced in early 2012. Now I wonder when Subaru will start to talk about their version of the FT-86

Press conference video on FT86 - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=463
Some great shots from the show - http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=456
