If they are going to market the FT86 a little higher, I would like it to have the 2GRFSE and a 6 speed manual that competes with the 370Z

But the R&D team is now more focused on minimising fuel consumption and producing the cleanest engine possible; the Subaru boxer engine planned for the car is not considered to be that clean or fuel-efficient.
Yes, I'm not sure why the EJ20 was chosen. Gleaning info. from the vehicles that are out now, the 2.5L H4 is just as efficient and far more potent than this 2.0L. If you compare the 2005 2.0L WRX against the 2006 2.5L WRX you will find that their air pollution scores are 2 and 6 respectively.

Lightbulb 2013

If a report from Japan's Best Car is to be believed, Toyota will delay the release of the FT-86 from 2011 to 2013.

The reasons behind the delay are varied, and include a different design direction, the economic slowdown and possibly a revised powertrain strategy that could include some kind of hybrid motivation.

As reported previously, the original FT-86 concept was just that – a design study – and Toyota is apparently second-guessing the styling of the coupe before it reaches production. Additionally, ToMoCo is reportedly gauging the success of the Honda CR-Z, which could influence the final drivetrain specs of the FT-86. If that means a hybrid powerplant is in the cards, we're not totally heartbroken, but if Toyota decides to remake the coupe as a front-driver, consider our dreams officially dashed. Regardless, the next iteration of the FT-86 is slated to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of 2011.

Sounds like magazine bullcrap. The design has been applauded by most everyone, to abandon it would be really silly.

There is also a report of a smaller car based on the FT-86 coming and that would make more sense to be a CRZzzzzzzzz competitor. I started a thread about it. You can't gauge the CRZ yet b/c Japan buys anything hybrid and anything that is new. Outside of Japan we will see how it does.

They already have the FWD tC so they just need to go forward with this.

I don't know about you guys but personally, I would feel that it would be an insult if the Subaru version of this car is RWD (instead of Symmetrical AWD).

I know the Subie fanboys will treat such an announcement as blasphemy.

What do you guys think?

Nothing new for Toyota they keep talking about this concept car but yet they can't even deliver what's up with the management of Toyota lately.

Just give us the damn car already. The demand is here. I'm not sure why Prelude, Celica, and perhaps even the Probe were dropped?...okay, well maybe the Probe is understandable.

Default Toyota FR-S: Official Name of the FT-86?

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...6-concept.html

The biggest question surrounding Toyota’s awesome FT-86 concept isn’t if the car will make it to production, but what it will be called. That mystery may have just been solved, with word that Toyota Motor Corporation has just filed a trademark for the “FR-S” name in both the U.S. and Canada.
The name certainly makes a lot of sense, with “FR” standing for front-engine, rear-wheel drive, while the “S” presumably being used to indicate that this is in fact a sports car. Like the FT-86 Concept’s name, it’s also a throwback to the Corolla AE-86 that inspired it.

Makes sense. That name would also kinda make it the pseudo successor to the MR-S.
