Toyota/Subaru/Scion Lightweight Sports Car: Toyota GT86, Subaru BRZ, Scion FRS!

We know the Toyota rear-wheel-drive coupe will wear a Scion badge, and now we might finally know what it's going to be called. The just-make-it-already Toyota FT-86 concept has evolved into the Scion FT-86 and word on the web is that the production version will be known as the Scion FT-S.
Look for the Scion FT-S coupe to make its debut at the 2011 New York Auto Show. Rumor has it that a 2.5-liter engine, not a 2.0-liter, will power the rear wheels and that Toyota plans a heavy marketing push aimed at the drifting crowd.
The Subaru version is slated for a Geneva debut, and the rumormill now suggests that all-wheel drive is planned for the Subaru coupe, which should easily differentiate it from the Scion FT-S and help keep the 2 cars from cannibalizing each other's sales. If anyone's listening, we'll take an AWD Subaru coupe in full STI trim, please.

If true it is very disappointing it is going to be a Scion and not a Toyota. The Scion brand just does not have enough respect or cache for this car, Scion vehicles are not even that well received except for the xC coupe, and Scion already has a small sporty 2 door 4 cylinder coupe so why do they need another one. If it is a Scion many people will write it off as some cheap cost cut car for teenagers not worthy of seriously looking into, it is doubtful it is going to get a high hp motor option either if it is a Scion since it would make it pretty expensive and priced out of what Scion could realistically ask for a car. Toyota needs a sports car or at least a sporty car in its lineup much more then Scion.

This damn car, there is so much rumor about it that I am starting to not care anymore. Note how many changes this latest report makes. Toyota version becomes a Scion, 2.0L becomes a 2.5L, Subaru version goes from RWD to AWD. I just don't buy too much of this crap put out anymore.
What remains is that this is going to be a hot car that is well liked. Sure, it has been reported that it won't be as cheap as it was intended to be, but I don't think that this matters. It would seem to me that offering it as a RWD Toyota would please alot of people and offering it as an AWD Subaru would please even more people. So slap a 6MT in there, directed injected Subaru H4, and put this thing to market already.

Really should be branded a Toyota at the now expected price-range in the mid-$20K range.
Can see the Scion doing somewher btwn 15-20K units yearly (maybe more if Toyota can keep the price down), and the Subie version doing maybe 10-12K (could be more like 8K tho).
The market for Asian sports coupes in the US just isn't that big nowadays (but then again, it wasn't that big to begin w/) and the pony cars from Detroit are doing a good job of dominating the lower end of the sports coupe market.

This is just a RUMOR. Not reality, whether they name it a scion or toyota has yet to be seen. And wow, what kinda story telling is this when we just had the FT086 teaser #2 with... you guessed it, a TOYOTA badge on the hood!

My gut tells me this should be a Toyota. However logically I can see a good argument being made for them using Scion starting with they are platform/development sharing this with Subaru and that does create some branding unknowns from an executive's point of view.
