Not to take anything away from the Maybach (its an awesome car!!) but who cares about a Maybach when the LS460's rear seats almost rival it for 200-300k cheaper.

Maybachs are nice, but not sexy nor distinctive. It's a uber-S-Class with limo amenities.
It isn't young and fresh like Bentleys, nor iconic like RR, nor seductive like Astons, nor exotic like any Italian supercar.
Maybach needs to stand out much more to command the price premium they seek. What should they do about it? I dunno...

A Phantom is slightly cheaper, can be as spacious and just as customisable by the client as the Maybach. The only cool thing on the Maybach is its rear glass roof with variable opacity. (I forget the name for it).
For something a little more sporty, there's the Continental Flying Spur.
I've seen the Maybach both in the showroom (no idea why it was there since I thought they were made-to-order) and on the street. It doesn't have that presence that a Phantom does IMO. Sure it's long (esp. the 62 version) and that's probably how people will notice it.

Perhaps they'll just roll Maybach features into an even higher level S class.
