Owen "turned his bike right in front of the car"...

Perhaps Owen should have kept riding in a straight line and looked around now and then.

It's too easy to blame others nowadays.

I resort back to my original statement in this thread Parents need to teach their kids how to ride a bike.

When I was a kid, we got OFF THE ROAD and were always aware of where cars were in relation to us and we never were surprised.

Its easy to set blame on someone that isn't there to defend themselves instead of just owning up to the fact that your kid was being an idiot and that its probably from something you didn't teach him/her.

As for the blind; I think motion sensors would work well; I've seen several shows on the Science Channel that have shown special motion sensor systems that can tell the blind where things are. Based upon that sensory input, their brain can rewire itself. Some really amazing stuff too

I will explain the side of the blind people a little more to you guys. When you are blind the neurological connections that would normally make its way from the eyes to the brain get rerouted to the other senses. Blind people use their enhanced senses to compensate for the loss of visual acuity. Therefore the auditory world around them is what will help them to navigate. When you have a silent car it makes it very difficult to asses the distance and the speed of the car. Some of my patients tell me they know who is entering the room just by the tone of their foot steps. Thats how sensitive the hearing is. Now I am not saying we need to put huge exhausts on a prius for a very small minority . Just trying to explain

And not that anyone cares but the inverter whine on the 2010 Prius is noticeably louder than the Gen 2. Not sure if Toyota did that intentionally.

Question:

I noticed when reversing in the 2010 Prius, the driver hears beeping inside.

Is a beeping sound heard outside the car also (like many trucks/vans)?

It might be the parking assist (not sure if the Prius has this option).

Again I like the quiet and I like cruising around in electric mode. Never thought I'd say that since the other GS's have aftermarket exhausts.

Ok, this is getting ridiculous. I can't wait to see the future where most cars are full-electric and makes almost no noise. LOL

Maybe we should all add an Air Horn to the front bumper for pedestrians, then you probably get sued for deafening them, oh well, what the heck is blind people walking around traffic like its a park or something..

It's not, all Priuses I've driven beep inside the car when put into reverse. It's not audible from outside.

I remember reading this last year. I still don't see a good reason for it.

One of the most annoying “features” of the generation 3, 2010 Prius is the beeping noise you hear while backing up. As soon as you move the shift lever into “R” for Reverse, the beeps start. I would estimate about one beep per second, for the entire time your backing out of the garage, driveway, or wherever. A few weeks ago I had to drive in reverse for nearly a full minute as I was behind another car that was backing out of a long drive, and both of us had to wait on some oncoming traffic. Thats when it hit me…this was the most annoying safety feature on my new Toyota.

I’m guessing the engineers had good intentions when they made this bleeping beeping noise the default setting from the factory. Probably the easiest way to imagine what it sounds like is to compare it to the noise you hear when a garbage disposal truck (or similarly equipped large vehicle) backs up. The difference is, nobody outside of the vehicle hears the noise. It’s not like it is there to tell everyone…”Hey you, look out now, I’m backing up my Prius here!”. What it tells you (the driver, passengers, and other occupants) is, “Hurry up and back this hybrid up…nobody can stand this noise any longer!”.

Good to know, and not especially useful beeping (just annoying to the driver/me).

It's because the shifter doesn't stay in R when you shift it into Reverse. It goes back to the default spot where that dot is. Sure it shows up next to the speedometer what gear you're in but I think we all know the quality of drivers who are on the road.
