Well lazyAlex, here's a friend's recent purchase of an 08 G35 S Sedan.
She didn't like the looks of the IS so that was eliminated easily.

I think the IS350 and G35 are pretty evenly matched and it's hard to say which is the better car. IS350 is a bit faster and more refined, the G35 is more fun to drive, is more spacious, and offers AWD and a manual tranny.
The IS350 costs $3000 more and my take is that most of that is the badge premium.

The Toyota Crown is a fine example of this. Up until a couple of years ago, the same could be said for the Toyota Celsior, Aristo, & Altezza. The point is, the Skyline is still an entry level luxury car in Japan, just like the Toyotas I just mentioned (well, the Crown is higher up on the chain, but you get the idea).
"A Crown, one day", is an old saying in Japan, implying a lot of people desire a Crown but just too expensive.

Some of you guys are going way off on a tangents. Who cares what a car costs and how it's positioned in Japan unless you are in Japan?
You look at a car based on its own merits. I'm always a bit mystified when someone says they are shopping for a car and then ask a forum full of total strangers what they think if they buy this car or that one.
Do your own homework, your own test drives and buy what YOU like. Don't bow to peer pressure.

I chose the IS250 over the G35x.
While the extra 100hp in the G was nice, it wasn't something I'd really be able to utilize very much in every day driving. I thought the styling of the Lexus was much nicer, and the quality of the Lexus interior materials (leather, wood, plastic) was just not even in the same league. My kids would have liked a little more leg room in back, but the IS room was sufficient.
The answer must come from within--which car does the purchaser like better? None of us have to live with your decision every day.

Neither one are really my cup of tea, but I chose the G35 simply because it's the more attractive, less cramped, and more affordable of the two. Both cars offer similar features, but you definitely get more for less with the G35. Personally, I think the IS250 is incredibly underpowered for its price. For the same price as an IS250, you can get a G35 with more features and much more power (as well as space). IMO, the IS350 is overpriced, which is why I would never own one. Also, because it looks too much like more inexpensive cars as the Corolla & Mitsubishi Lancer. If I'm spending nearly 40k on a luxury car, I don't want it mistaken for a Mitsubishi (yes I know the IS came out first).
Overall, both are great cars, but I could never justify spending the extra money on the IS simply because it's a "Lexus". Everyone knows it's the cheapest Lex you can buy, so the prestige factor really shouldn't be much of a factor at all - at least at this price point.

I think the Lexus IS350 is an excellent car. But its driving feel isn't what I would consider exciting; all personal preference ofcourse.
Whereas the IS350 feels subtle & tranquil, the G35 sport feels very sporty for its class; more of a driver's car. Wasn't impressed at all with the steering feedback & softness of the suspension in the IS.
It all comes down to what your priorities are. And for me, the G35 is more of my type. Luxurious, yet sporty.
This is the luxury sport segment; I don't understand why Lexus fails to offer a coupe & 6MT version of their IS350
. Now that would be an incredible move by Lexus.
Goodluck with your decision. You can't go wrong with either car
