Default VESPA: Classic & Cool, or Cheeky & Geeky?

What are your thoughts?

Vespa has been "mod" in Europe for decades, and they're now becoming quite "mod" in the U.S. Perhaps urbanization and rising gas prices is helping scooter enthusiasm rise, but will it ever gain respect?

On one hand, Vespas are functional, great on gas, cheap to insure, distinctive, and have excellent resale value.

On the other hand, they're expensive, high maintenance, slow compared to other scooters, and laughable at times.

I'd prefer a motorcycle over a scooter. They're very popular in Boston where it's a walking/biking city. And parking is hell here although I see tickets on scooters all the time for parking violations.

It's really popular in Japan too but it's ridiculously priced. I'd rather buy one of Japan's 2stroker 250CC bikes like a NSR250 or something.

I dig Vespa's, although the price is steep as others have said. Fairly certain you don't need a motorcycle license to drive one which is why I suspect they are quite popular in NYC.

Great for dense urban areas or planned communities. For everything else, forget it.

49cc or less = no need for a license.

50cc plus = license.

Hence, all Vespa require a motorcycle license...

To paraphrase Pete Townsend if your a "mod" they're cool if your your a "greaser" they're not, that will take you back to 1968 or so.http://www.quadrophenia.net/

Vespa's are ghey...

I've seen them in person and have had the pleasure of riding one. Luckily I was driving around in my neighborhood with a full faced helmet, because I felt like a total tool...

My wife owns a 2005 Vespa Gran Turismo 200cc. She loves it! It goes pretty good about 95mph. I still like my 06' gsxr 1000, though a lil' better.
