I agree with Lil4X. Stick with either the 289 or 302. The 390 (and of course, the 428 and 429) were not only stuffed in under the hood too tightly, making it almost impossible to do even simple things, like change plugs (which, in those days, you did every 10,000 mles or so), but was a thick, cast-iron block that weighed a ton, giving the front end sluggish handling on the relatively primitive suspensions and recirculating-ball steering systems of the day.
I remember, on the 428 Cobra Jet Mach 1's and 429 Boss Mustang/Cougar Eliminators, watching some mechanics actually unbolt and raise the engine up some to do routine maintenance or change parts.

good observations from all. im sticking to my 302.
as far as eleanor. for the longest time i wanted that car, and i was originally going to look to buy a fastback to build into the gt500 but came across this and now i feel like there are too many eleanor clones and thats so outdated. dont get me wrong. i wouldnt turn one down if someone offered it to me, hahah
