YONKERS, N.Y. — In a stunning blow to Toyota's sterling reputation for reliability, Consumer Reports on Tuesday said it no longer recommends the V6 version of the best-selling 2007 Toyota Camry or the four-wheel-drive V8 version of the 2007 Toyota Tundra because of below-average reliability. The all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus GS sedan also scored a below-average rating and is no longer recommended, according to the Consumer Reports 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey.
Toyota fell from 1st to 5th place, behind Honda, Acura, Scion and Subaru, in average vehicle reliability. Toyota had yet to respond to the survey results on its Toyota Open Road Blog or its North American corporate Web site as of early afternoon on Tuesday. Consumer Reports emphasized that the four-cylinder and hybrid versions of the Camry and the rear-drive version of the GS scored above average in reliability and will continue to be recommended.
Consumer Reports praised Ford for advances in reliability, noting that the 2007 Ford Fusion and 2007 Mercury Milan are among "the most reliable cars."
"They and the two-wheel-drive Ford F-150 V6 make up three of the only four domestic models on Consumer Reports' 'most reliable' list," it said. The 2007 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, as well as the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, were all average or above.
The overall results for domestic manufacturers are "hit and miss," says the consumer magazine.
Consumer Reports said U.S. brands account for almost half the models — 20 of 44 — on its list of 'least reliable' models. The least reliable car of all is the General Motors 2007 Pontiac Solstice. Its reliability was calculated to be 220 percent less reliable than the average vehicle. But the 2007 Dodge Charger was singled out for praise as it "earned a recommendation after its reliability showed substantial improvement from previous years." The Charger was not recommended in last year's survey because of below-average reliability.
Among the 36 makes in the survey, Land Rover was named the "least reliable on average." European brands earned kudos for "overall improvement." "The Audi A3, A4 and A6 are now all above average or better, as are some or all versions of the BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series," the survey said. "The Volvo S60 is also above average. The Porsche 911 is above average and is now recommended."
