There's what I could afford and what I'm willing to buy...
If I had to buy in '08 to replace what I have... I'd probably trade the Explorer for a Ford Edge since it will ride smoother and get better economy.
As for the MX-5 (Miata) - not sure what I'd trade that in for - it's so much fun and LIGHT with the simplest possible roof mechanism and great fuel economy and I think I MUST now own a convertible for the foreseeable future. I just don't see anything else in the ball park.

I'm a little more sedate and conservative, auto-wise, than a lot of you guys, so don't laugh. Though an auto enthusiast to the core, I'm not into real hard driving or real high-performance stuff, though I can handle a car if I have to, and I drive moderately hard on the reviews checking acceleration, handling, and braking.....and of course I review high-performance cars when you guys request it, and when they are available.
To be honest, I think for the money, dollar for dollar, it is hard to beat today's Subarus and Hyundais. If I had 35K or less to spend I would probably choose......and recommend to others.....something from one of those two firms (I especially like the Outback as a daily driver, particularly in the winter). The Acura TSX is also a very nice car for the money, and ranks highly.
But if I had more than 35K to spend it would be a different story. Most of the cars over that price range, IMO, are not as much of an overall value per dollar as the better ones under 35K.......they are better and more impressive than cheaper cars, of course, in many ways, but not necessarily justifying inflated price tags.
In the over-35K price range, IMO there are several standouts, especially if you want a daily driver as well. The Acura RL, Lexus GS300/350 AWD, and Lexus LS460 have all vastly impressed me (I have not reviewed the LS600H).
For value per dollar spent in the over-35K category, I think the RL is the best of the three....that is the one that would probably end up in my driveway.
If cost is not a factor at all, I would probably take home an LS600H, even not having reviewed or driven one yet.......the combination of AWD and the LS platform would, IMO, be unequalled anywhere else in the industry.
Sorry if I sound a little long-winded here, but, the way I see it, it was a complex question and there are no simple answers.

Thanks, mmarshall. You always cut through the BS and the biases to provide fair and balanced opinions.
