Default IS350 and SC430

OK guys,

This is the scenerio. There are two cars, one new IS350 and a slightly used (35,000 mile) SC430, and both cars have the keys on the hood, don't mind the pricing.

The cars will be your daily driver and the car you own for a couple of years (more like 5). Both cars would be modded to an extent so the SC and IS will basically not have stock wheels or ride hight and perhaps different body kits.

To clarify some more only a few passangers will be in the car at a time maybe just one of my friends will ride with me on the weekends. This is going to be my car and the family has other cars that can be used for transport.

Which would you take?

is this your ONLY car? are you going to take more than 1 passenger? if so, the is350. if this is your only car, i think is350 is probably a bit more practical as well.

we had sc430 only coz' we had a gs400, otherwise it's not enough

plus, sc430 will change style soon

While I think the SC430 is a much better car over all in terms of quality and fit and finish, I'd take the IS350 even if that car is really not my style. The sole reason is because it has a hard top and not a convertible. On a secondary note, even if the IS350 is a small car and had a tight interior space (Especially the back seat) it still seems larger compared to the back seat of the SC430

I would probably take the IS, then again I am a little biased. Even though I usually don't have passengers in the back of my car, I like having it there for those days when you do need it. I came from an Integra, which has a lot more space in the back than an SC does and it did feel a bit claustrophobic.

Toss my vote in for the IS350, too, even though it is not quite as solidly built as the old IS300 despite having a more highly-finished interior....it is more glitzy but also more plasticky than the IS300.

The SC is more fun on a nice sunny day, but is also a far more complex car and, for all practical purposes, a two-seater. It is, IMO, also ugly and awkward-looking.

Who cares about how big the rear seats are? If you don't have kids, and it's not the only car you have access too it's not much of a concern. I only have one car and it doesn't even have back seats!

I'm not a big SC fan but I'd still take it over the IS, the IS is everywhere, the SC is not as common and having a hardtop convertible is pretty cool

IS350, because I think it looks more sporty.

I almost got a used SC430 instead of my new IS350 at the time of purchase.

However, in the end, the IS was more powerful, more gas efficient, had "real" rear seats (sorta), less insurance costs, more technological advancements, better transmission, better handling, and bigger trunk.

The SC430 trumps it only with exclusivity and the hardtop convertible.

Functionally, the IS was the one for me...

I agree, a wise choice....but neither car is good in the winter. For that you will want the IS250 AWD, GS300/350 AWD, or an RX350.

Aw c'mon - you don't HAVE to have AWD to survive a winter. You'd be surprised how many people still have good ole RWD in Chicagoland... In fact, it's the weenies in the SUVs that usually get stuck - a little over confidence if you ask me.

Kind of a moot point really since harut44 is in CA and probably won't have to deal with a midwest-type winter.

I've always been a fan of the SC430, but it is looking a little long in the tooth. I'd say go with the IS350, it's a fresher design and a nice blend of sport and luxury.

True.....in CA the winters are pretty mild except high in the mountains.

The average driver, though, on slippery roads, all else equal, does better with FWD than RWD and MUCH better with AWD....but you're correct that some SUV and AWD drivers are too overconfident, do stupid things, and pay the price.

Back to topic, though......I agree with you, for several reasons, that the IS350 overall is a better choice than the SC430. The SC, though, does have a stunning interior and top-down fun on a nice day. But I wouldn't call its styling long in the tooth...........more like a set of dentures.

And that is why I am eagerly awaiting the IS coupe/convertible...
