A world without Lexus...

My goodness the market would be so different. I dont even think Toyota would be such a power house like it is today either.
But without getting into to much detail, I would probably be a Jaguar and a Mercedes guy.

Fascinating - this far into the poll, that no-one has nominated Mercedes... though surely the Mercedes customer (especially the S-Class) was exactly whom Lexus was targeting with the original LS... and who stll makes the most comparable cars in terms of general ride/comfort character... Quite surprised that BMW is doing so well... so different to many of the values associated with Lexus today...
...makes one wonder that if Lexus had never existed to put competitive pressure on Mercedes, perhaps they would never have gone through that cost-cutting phase and would still be basking in the tank-like reputation of their older models?

As for me if there was NO LEXUS back in 1996, here is what I was looking at
BMW 3 (not seriously, too small)
Acura TL and CL (almost got a CL 2.2)
Mitsu Diamante
Infiniti Q45
Nissan Maxima
I am certain I would have bought an Acura TL or CL in 1996. I am sure by now I would have dumped them and moved to BMW, to a pre Bangle 3 or 5.

Sad to say that I actually remember the world without Lexus . Thank goodness I was still in school though.
I would go for Acura or Infiniti. If Mercedes did not have the quality/reliability issues that it does have, then I would have voted for them.

Acura will always be on my short list of near luxury or luxury cars. They make really good all around cars. Not the best luxury cars, or handling cars, but a good balance of luxury and performance and price. Acura gets a bad rep here on CL, but that is something I disagree with. On the poll though I didn't vote for Acura and voted for Infiniti. The new G35/G37 and M35/45 are simply tops in its class at this moment IMHO thus if I bought today it would be an Infiniti.
To be honest, I too am surprised Acura is leading the poll on this forum. I would have thought Infiniti would be doing much better as well.

I think Lexus fills a nice void (or creates a segment depending on how you look at it). In a world without Lexus, I'm not going to say BMW because that's a totally different car.
I'd have to go Jag/Range Rover. Sophisticated and yet for the older crowd.
