Default New Borgwarner 7-speed DSG w/ Dry clutch

Volkswagen's dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) has proven that a balance can be struck between driver involvement and running the daily slog without a cramped left leg, with a bump in fuel economy to boot. As reported earlier this year, VW has plans to introduce another cog onto its six-speed DSG unit, while at the same time dropping the wet clutch arrangement for a dry-clutch setup. Now it's official: the new seven-speed DSG not only boasts another gear and dry clutches, but it's the first time the DSG transmission is able to be mounted for a front-traverse setup.

DSG is like a smart manual transmission
it has 2 clutches that predicts what gear you will be going to next and have the 2nd clutch ready to engage on that gear

makes for a very very fast and easy shifting in the world of manual transmissions

Something like that, although I don't believe it's intelligence has anything to do with it.
A DSG is like two manual transmissions in one. It consists of two clutches, one that engages gear 1, 3, and 5 (+7 in this case) and the other engages gears 2, 4, and 6.
For example, picture yourself shifting from 1st to 2nd. In a traditional manual the clutch is disengaged, the gear selected, then the clutch is re-engaged. In a DSG transmission clutch 1 is engaged to gear 1 and clutch 2 is hovering over gear 2. During the shift, clutch 1 disengages as clutch two engages simultaneously. The original borgwarner DSG used fluid similar to automatic transmissions to engage the clutch(s), however this new 7 speed DSG is said to use a dry clutch just like a bonafide race car

So would the DSG (auto) S5 be fairly quicker than the manual? How much faster would it be on 0-60 and 1/4 mi? 0-60 in .3 sec less? 1/4 mi in .2 sec less?

Yes, it will be much faster than manual. There was a fun video of Tsuchiya with the dsg volkswagon competing against the manual and vice versa that demonstrates how fast dsg is.

damn, just saw that. DSG GTi is almost .5 sec faster in the 1/4 than the 6 spd even with a 200 lb weight disadvantage. jesus christ, now I want to wait for the auto S5. it'll probably do 0-60 in 4.5 sec and 1/4 mi in 13 sec. almost as fast as the big guns (M3, RS4, IS-F). omg I can't imagine the RS5 with the DSG, if it does have it. I wonder why Audi didn't put the DSG option for the RS4 which would have made the car much faster than the M3 and IS-F.

I believe DSG hasn't been proven on very high horsepower engines, but since Porsche and BMW are going to use it too it will soon be proven!

But rumors still have this being a tiptronic and not a DSG. That won't be anywhere near as nice.

It has been proven in the Veyron but that is a "special" application. They have not yet been made available in mass market high HP applications though.

Maybe not yet, but very close. The new Nissan GT-R uses the same Borgwarner 6 speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle with its ~480HP. That counts as high horsepower + great weight distribution to me.
