I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. (it must be noted though that GM beat BMW to the punch with their innovative new 4.5L diesel which uses a similar design)

Yeah I noticed that too, very interesting. I'm not sure if anyone else does this.

Direct injection, forced induction, modified intake valves, etc...everyone is looking for bigger power with less gas, so it's awesome all the way around

No word on power output expectations?
If this is going into the non-M 5 series+ models then either the Ms must be getting a power boost or else these will come in under 500hp.
I'm going to guess 435-460hp is what these will be rated at with emphasis on an extremely flat torque curve, non existent turbo lag, and great fuel economy for a powerful V8... much like the current TT 3.0 I6 is in the 335i.

This will be replacing the V8 in the *50i models.
The new V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology and direct gasoline injection, is likewise making its world debut in the BMW X6. Displacing 4.4 liters, this eight-cylinder with maximum engine output of 400 hp and peak torque of 450 lb-ft available over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,800-4,500 rpm, is the most powerful engine ever seen in a BMW X Model.
The new eight-cylinder is indeed truly impressive not only through its outstanding thrust and pulling force, but also through its compact dimensions. For this is the first eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the world to feature its turbocharger in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders.
