Default Indian company Tata to introduce 100,000 rupee (US$2,447) car

Tata Motors is part of the Tata Group that is currently negotiating to take Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.

EDIT: Working link http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080108/bs_nm/tata_car_dc_1

Around noon on January 10, the massive Tata Motors pavilion at the Pragati Maidan would be the place to be, if you are a chronicler of history or an industry specialist or just a plain automotive enthusiast. At that time Ratan Tata will take the covers off the Tata people's car which has been dominating mindspace both inside and outside the industry for its sheer concept and execution since the better part of a decade.

The obvious need to provide a more stable, safe and protective set of basic transportation at an affordable price point to the Indian masses who prefer to be astride a two-wheeler was what got the Tata car project going in 1997. The genesis for this car took in a lakh as inspiration, one hundred thousand rupees being the target selling point and the team went to work, conjuring up an all weather car with seating for four and with a modicum of performance allied to low operating costs.

"The genesis for this car took in a lakh as inspiration, one hundred thousand rupees being the target selling point and the team went to work, conjuring up an all weather car with seating for four . . ."
. . . and standing room for 63 . . .
. . . and with a modicum of performance allied to low operating costs." . . .
. . . sorta like a bicycle . . .

Will the LR model include 8-foot drive? (*only with 4 passengers on board, this will be the Fred Flintstone edition) Will the Jag variant come with telematics tech support from Hewlett Packard down the street?

Didn't Yugo finally demonstrate you can't build a "(3rd) world car" at a price point that coincides with that of a decent riding lawnmower without some critical quality sacrifices? It all sounds good on paper, but good luck with production and support of a road vehicle that's basically four lawn chairs and a small outboard motor tied to a Chinese-market skateboard.

They should sell that here in Mexico, I am sure there would be buyers.

Will it share the same engine as a Cuisinart?

I doubt at that price point they'll be able to sell it in the US. We have crash standards and emissions standards. A car that cheap will have to be bare bones.

Driving the cost-cutting were Tata’s engineers, who in an earlier project questioned whether their trucks really needed all four brake pads or could make do with three. As they built Tata’s new car, for about half the price of the next-cheapest Indian alternative, their guiding philosophy was: Do we really need that?

The model appearing on Thursday has no radio, no power steering, no power windows, no air-conditioning and one windshield wiper instead of two, according to suppliers and Tata’s own statements. Bucking prevailing habits, the car lacks a tachometer and uses an analog rather than digital speedometer, according to Mr. Taneja, who until recently was president of the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India, representing many of Tata’s suppliers as they signed deals with the company.

Frugal engineering pervades the car’s internal machinery, too, with even greater implications for the vehicle’s safety and longevity.

To save $10, Tata engineers redesigned the suspension to eliminate actuators in the headlights, the levelers that adjust the angle of the beam depending on how the car is loaded, according to Mr. Chaturvedi of Lumax. In lieu of the solid steel beam that typically connects steering wheels to axles, one supplier, Sona Koyo Steering Systems, used a hollow tube, said Kiran Deshmukh, the chief operating officer of the company, which is based in Delhi.

Tata chose wheel bearings that are strong enough to drive the car up to 45 miles an hour, but they will wear quickly above that speed, reducing the car’s life span but not threatening consumer safety, according to Mr. Taneja. The car’s top speed is 75 miles an hour.

Reducing the weight curbed material costs and enabled the company to use a cheaper engine. People familiar with the car describe a $700 rear-mounted engine built by the German company Bosch, measuring 600 to 660 cubic centimeters, with a horsepower in the range of 30 to 35. By comparison, the Honda Fit, one of the smallest cars available in the United States, has a horsepower of 109.

According to industry experts, the car runs on a continuous variable transmission, a lighter alternative to manual or automatic transmissions.

Ooooh boy, I wonder what this means for the future of LR and Jag?

Very little , I suspect.

You have to remember this car is aimed at people who currently transport their entire family on a moped. The fact that it has 4 seats inside a spaceframe chassis means that it's already a far safer alternative.

With a car like this, we'd have to start using upper and lower case letters so people aren't mistaken.

H= horsepower h= hamsterpower

Let's just say I'd feel really sorry for the guy who owns one of these and has to line up next to Prius at the light.

I'm guessing no cover for the manual shifter, a piece of cardboard as the dash. Do you really need doors? I mean most come up from mopeds so doors aren't necessary. You do need a strong B-pillar in case of a side-impact collision.

Apparently it's very ecomonical - a new type of Hybrid.

Found a spy photo of it being unloaded for testing at the Nurburgring:
