we need it everywhere. i've done a lot of long trips and this is the most annoying thing. in a 2 lane in a 70mph and a bunch of cars taking up both lanes doing 55 to 60.

I see that everyone here agreed with this idea right away, but did any of you guys actually listen to it word for word. They said the left lane is for "PASSING" vehicles and emergency vehicles. They didn't state anywhere that if you are going to be going over the speed limit it's OK to stay in that lane. They infer that after you "PASS" someone, you will go back to the right lane and resume driving the speed limit or under.
However we all know that most people are not like that and will continue to go 70-85 in a 65, and guess what, that is a premise for a ticket too. So based on this law, you are given a small increment of time to use the left lane for "PASSING", and then unless you want a speeding ticket, you have to bounce back to the right lane.

I agree that drivers going under the speed limit should stay right but here in the Puget Sound area the left lane is a travel lane, the whole idea that it is only used for passing and turning left is far outdated for our circumstances. With the volumes of car traffic along with the big semi and delivery traffic from Canada down through to California there is no way you can safely use the left lane for passing only. In some cases it's a 2 lane highway with a 70 mph limit on cars and 60 mph limit on big rigs. Combined with on / off ramps the right lane is way too congested to even go 70 which leaves the left lane as a travel lane.
