Confused With California Gas Prices

I was out in Cali this past weekend for a conference. I saw a couple of gas stations as we were leaving LAX with prices of $2.99 - $3.01 just for regular. I've always heard of $4 a gallon prices before. California is a big state and maybe it's because of where in the state you live in. What gives?

you have to understand the history of ca gas bullsh@# - we used to have refined gas mixed with mtbe, so it "incurred" extra costs according to the gas companies. once the state found out that MTBE could contaminate our ground waters and cause cancer though, they changed the reformulation again making us the consumers pay fot it. combine this with some recent local refinery plant "fires", it has caused the prices to remain in flux indefinitely until recently. IMHO, it's all a crock of bs concocted just to raise gas prices, but it's gotten much better recently...

i agree, if we truly had a oil supply issue we would see lines at gas stations and "out of gas signs" etc. When the heck was the last time you saw anything like this. Im not convinced that there is any supply issue to even warrant a fearmongering price hike when some refinery catches fire. The oil supply in this country isnt standing on a razor thin edge where a refinery shutdown would cause it to crumble.

And, please.........resist the temptation to use cheap, cut-rate brands. They save a few pennies per gallon at the pump at fill-up time, but can gum up the engine and fuel injectors with carbon because they don't have enough of a detergent package in them to keep deposits from building up. Then you suffer from poor engine drivability and will just have to turn around and spend money anyway to clean things out with a fuel-system additive like BG-44K.
If you really want to take care of your engine and fuel system, use either Shell or Chevron........they are the benchmarks for quality in gas and detergent additives.
