Ford Crossovers Stayed Hot in January
- Ford crossovers pick up where they left off in 2007; Ford Edge sales
climbed 95 percent and Lincoln MKX rose 78 percent.
- New Focus bolsters Ford's share of small car market with 44 percent
increase.
- Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 148,355, down 4 percent.
- Total Ford Motor Company sales (including Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo)
totaled 159,914, down 4 percent.
DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --Demand for Ford's
crossovers remained strong in January. Sales for the Ford Edge were 95
percent higher than a year ago and the Lincoln MKX was up 78 percent.
Retail demand for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars also was strong in
January, especially for the new Focus. Sales for the Focus were up 44
percent compared with a year ago, with retail sales up 33 percent. Combined
retail sales for the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln MKZ also were
higher than a year ago.
"We're very pleased with this result," said Jim Farley, Ford's group
vice president, Marketing and Communications. "Our dealers really delivered
this month, despite a challenging economic and competitive environment.
"It's not going to get any easier - at least for awhile," said Farley.
"Recent monetary actions and the proposed stimulus package may help the
economy later this year, but we're not pinning our hopes on that. Our plan
is based on restructuring our business to be profitable at lower demand and
changed mix while also accelerating the development of new products people
want to buy."
The next wave of new Ford products will arrive this summer - the
distinctively designed Ford Flex crossover and the elegant Lincoln MKS
sedan. A new Ford F-150 pickup truck will debut later in the fall.
Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales totaled 148,355, down 4 percent
compared with a year ago.
Total Ford Motor Company sales, including Jaguar, Land Rover, and
Volvo, were 159,914, down 4 percent.
Note: The sales data included in this release and the accompanying
tables are based largely on data reported by dealers representing their
sales to retail and fleet customers.

Wow, HUGE drop for Lexus on the passenger car side! I don't think I've seen a drop like that in YEARS. Everything down but the GS 450/460.
Amazingly, the Lexus SUVs are still doing well. The GX is only down 3%, that is pretty amazing for an older SUV. The RX is old too, and sales are up 3%. The LX has a big first month.
Overall, a little over 20,000 vehicles sold. Benz is right behind with over 18k vehicles sold and they went up in January, Kudos to them.
Audi is flat, which is good for them, when the new A4 rolls out, it should help sales.
Acura is down big as well, the entire lineup down in sales. The new MDX is already down and as I've stated, hasn't been the homerun the last model was. Acura has the most affordable lineup but sales are down in this shaky economy.
Infiniti down as well but not as bad. Did they say the EX had a full month of sales and only 690 units were sold? That surely will go up in coming months. M35/45 sales right behind the GS. G37 sales up big, that with the EX might give them a flat year.

I don't think the EX will sell well. It's a nice SUV with a great interior, performance and looks, but it's WAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY too small.

Yes, there's a lot of uncertainty right now. Plus a new presidential election around the corner too with people holding their breath about which way the leadership will take things. It's not just cars either. Almost every sector of the economy is weak at the moment.

Kind of interesting how this happened so quickly. If it keeps up at all, this won't just be a good time to buy a house, it will be a good time to pickup a car. Especially those that don't get great mileage. The Prius is doing well but that will be interesting to watch. We have a local Toyota deader advertising Prius for 26K and Camry hybrid for 24K. The ad says they have 42 Prius at that price and 74 Camry hybrid at that price. Can't remember that in an ad in eco friendly, high gas price NoCali.
Sleepy thread this month. I guess there's not much fun in saying the LS still sold 1900 while it experienced a 36.6% drop compared to the S class 1600/21% drop and the A8 270/11.7% drop. I guess we can expect those "We still love you" emailers, phone messages, flyers, etc. from our friendly local luxury car dealer.

I work for an auto finance company. Many lenders are tightening up in sub prime buckets, just like the mortgage business. 2008 is going to be a tough year for car sales. Some customers will not be approved for a loan and cannot purchase.
