Bugatti cans Project Lydia, working on four-door coupe
Posted on Thursday 14 February 2008
Last month, reports coming out of Germany claimed Bugatti was planning on launching a new hyper-performance car, positioned above the current Veyron for its second model. The project was codenamed ‘Lydia’ and the new supercar supposedly would have 1,175hp and cost significantly more than the €1 million Veyron.
The guys at MotorTrend are now reporting that Lydia was under serious consideration but the project was dropped last year. According to a senior source at Bugatti’s parent company, Volkswagen, the desire for a second model remains but focus has now shifted in the direction of a four-door coupe with a front-mounted version of the 1,001hp 16.4 engine. The new super-sedan won’t come close to equaling the performance numbers of the Veyron but it would still likely be faster than any other production four-door on the planet.
The idea of a Veyron based sedan is nothing new. Rumors of the car first surfaced soon after the Veyron was released. Bugatti has spent hundreds of millions of dollars developing the Veyron’s world beating powertrain and officials want to recoup some of that investment by launching more variants. Of course, there’s also the long awaited Targa model as well.
