I know they do things a bit different in Canada, but pretty sure that is very illegal in the Nanny State to the North.

You just tell your insurance company that the plate will be registered to two cars. You can't drive the other car with the front plate cause you won't have the insurance decals right? Here, the licence plate is registered to the person, not the car so they can go on multiple vehicles (and carry over if you trade in your old car for a new one).
It's a good way to save on money if you don't use both cars at the same time. Someone at my friend's apt has that. They have two Accords and one set of plates.

Agreed.....though I'd shift the time frame back a couple of years to the early-mid 90's. After 2000, styling, and, to an extent, interior build quality started going downhll fast.

Even with Lexus, I like the new designs but not head over heels over them...yet....I hope...

This article is only stating the obvious. The quality and reliability of cars rose tremendously from the 70's - 80's, and then the 80's - 90's, due to the efforts of Japanese car makers like Honda and Toyota (i.e. Toyota lean manufacturing), raising the bar for all others. Better quality control = longer lasting cars.
Perhaps there is an equivalent improvement from the 90's - 00's, though I'd think more so for domestic and European cars.

I bought my '94 GS300 in 2002 with the intention of keeping it three years and then getting something newer. I originally bought it because it was quiet, comfortable, and smooth. Six years later, it is still all of those and it's reliable as well. The cost of ownership is regular maintenance and fuel. It is not exactly fuel efficient with an average of 19 mpg, but comparing that with a car payment on something new makes it an easy choice to stick with the GS.
