BMW super-sports car to get twin-turbo V10?

BMW prides itself on having some of the most dynamic and involving vehicles on the market today, but its fleet is still lacking a genuine sports car. Some may argue that BMW already offers the 507hp V10-powered M6 Coupe, but to the purists the M6 is an overweight four-seater GT that compromises performance for comfort.

Last year there were rumors BMW was developing a new super-sports car to rival Audi’s R8 and Mercedes’ upcoming SL Black Series, and now German magazine Auto Zeitung is once again reporting that a successor to the original M1 supercar is coming in 2012.

Latest news is that the car will feature a full carbon-fiber chassis plus a number of other weight saving technologies including carbon-ceramic brakes, forged magnesium wheels, Kevlar bucket seats and a carbon-fiber bodykit.

According to the source, the new car will feature a front-mounted V10 engine with a pair of turbochargers bolted on. The motor will be built from a completely new design and include an Infineon ECU developed by BMW’s F1 team. Engineers are hoping for a final output of 625hp, which in the car’s ultralight body could possibly take it close to speeds of up to 400km/h.

An entry-level version of the car will be offered with BMW’s new twin-turbo V8 engine and is rumored to cost around €150,000. Expect to pay up to €300,000 for the range topping force-fed V10 version.

So will this be a "super-sports car" or an actual "supercar"?

Reading the rumoured specs, sounds like a full supercar and a step above the R8 or SL Black Series.

If this is true, sounds like direct competition for the LF-A. N/A V10 vs TT V10, should be fun competition .

Power isn't everything, especially in the supercar segment. That SL Black Series is likely to be heavy compared to this rumoured BMW, or compared to an LF-A. I'm also guessing an LF-A or this upcoming BMW would eat an SL Black Series at a track.

The black series was quicker at the track than the SLR 722..so I would wait judgment before stating the LF-A would destroy it!

I haven't seen the track times yet for the SL Black Series, but the SLR 722 got 7:38 at the 'Ring. An LF-A test mule achieved an unofficial time of 7:24. Even if the SL Black Series gets a faster time on the 'Ring than the 722, I doubt it will be close to the LF-A's "unofficial" time.

Cool. I hope Lexus can consider a turbo'd LF-A as a high-end option too. Oh wait, the LF-A is not even confirmed for production.

That's classic Toyota though. Especially with top-secret projects like the LF-A, they are not confirmed for production until the last minute. Toyota did that with the 1st-gen LS and with the 1st-gen Prius.

We all know the LF-A is coming, it's even listed as an "F" car (instead of a concept car) right beside the IS-F on the Lexus Japan website. The only thing left is for Toyota to officially confirm production, and when that happens we will know the on-sale date will be close by .

Soon we might see some 800+ hp supersupercars. This horsepower war is getting a little out of control.
