Someone stole my rental car's centercaps!!!

Unfortunately not.
Here's the deal: my insurance covers stuff like this, less my deductible. Since the centercaps will be about $60, I can either buy it, or see if the rental place will even notice.
I'm not trying to be unscrupulous, but part of me wants to just say "F'ck it -- let it be."

I'd return it without mention of it. I'd be surprised if they noticed right away. If they do, you just pay for new ones (or try to negotiate out of it). If not, and they come back, you say what they would -- "They were there when I returned it."

I used to work for Hertz. I think you will be fine returning it as is. They are more concerned about body damage, if your tank is full, etc.
If anything, you can say you rented it that way. You have no idea what happened.

I used to work for Dollar a long while ago. I can tell you we would not have cared about missing center caps. As long as we could flip the car quickly, details like that were not important. The damage they are concerned about would be major body damage or damage to safety equipment such as lights, etc.
I rented a crappy PT Cruiser from Thrifty a few years ago and had a slight misunderstanding involving the back bumper and a rust-colored pole in a parking lot. The PT ended up with part of the rear bumper caved in and a big, rust-colored scuff on it. During the drive back to the airport, the caved in bumper popped back out. I turned the car in and they never said a thing about the scuff on the bumper. I think you'll be ok just turning it in.

I'd just return as is. Not your fault.
