I am planning on buying a car, but I will be going to college. (about 1 hour drive away), thing is i will be dorming there and keeping the car there. However if the car is registered under my moms name + at my home, not the dorm.
Will insurance still consider me as a driver, in the house, or less of a liability because i wont be living in the same house?

What is the setup of your current insurance plan?
You have to check the terms/conditions carefully, as they tend to vary widely between companies (and even between plans under the same company). I know that a classmate of mine in school was able to be covered under his parents' policy as a part-time driver even though he was the primary driver of the car when he got an apartment and attended a nearby college. OTOH, I can't imagine that most general vehicle insurance policies would allow this sort of thing.

Depends on the insurance company. I have a friend, much like gengar, who is down as a part-time driver even though he is the primary user. On the otherhand, for two years while I did not have a car in college and was out of state the insurance company would not change my status to part-time driver.

Again, you have to read the terms and conditions of the policy. Even as a part-time driver you may or may not be covered. After all, you could be a primary driver under a parent's policy and still not be covered when you go to school for any number of stipulations in the policy.

Have your mom say that you no longer live in the house and she will get a reduced rate and you will be straight. The car needs to be insured not you. They will only raise the rates because of you so there is no need to tell them. If you get in an accident say that its your moms car and she let you borrow it. Ive been doin it for years.
