Default Mercedes CLK Shooting Brake concept @ Paris show

Emerging reports suggest that Mercedes is gearing up to preview the new CLK coupe with a shooting brake concept at the upcoming Paris Auto Salon in October. For those unfamiliar, "shooting brake" is Euro-speak for a three-door estate wagon or extended hatchback, originally coined by coachbuilders for custom motor carriages made for hunting.

Although the CLK Shooting Brake is expected to show up as a concept car, reports suggest that Mercedes could actually build it in that form as an alternative bodystyle to the more conventional coupe and convertible variants replacing the ones we have now. Otherwise styling is expected to follow along the lines laid down by the S-Class sedan, like the E-Class sedan which the CLK is made to accompany in Merc's mid-range line-up.

They may be popular in Europe, but I think that body is WAY too big to be a three door. Three doors in the US are short wheel base vehicles.

Not a fan. What makes them think this will be popular anyway, after the R was a failure?

That's gonna be one long 3-door.

The short wheelbase C coupe was terrible and this is worse!

this defys logic ... crawl behind the front seats to get into the back, but once you're back there its SO spacious? ... reduce doors = reduce cost? ... like, even half width suicide doors a la saturn ion would be a help ... i dunno, i'm ok w. the look but the door set up seems not so logical

Simple. Their market research data is better than yours.

The R class in North America first of all was a very expensive car and people did perceive it to be nothing more than a fancy minivan. My uncle Larry in upsate New Jersey has an R class R500 with the AMG package and it actually looks pretty good. I never drove it but I did have a few rides in it and I have to be honest here, it is an amazing vehicle. Incredibly comfortable and seemingly endless cabin space. If you're a person who travels a lot, then the R class is probably a great car for your needs.

This shooting brake concept looks pretty good. I found some other photos on the net that are guessing at what the next generation CLK will look like. Here:

The last photo is the same as shooting brake, with a different rear...

"Shooting Brakes" have been an "in" thing in Europe for decades. Many classic European marques have had shooting brakes in their lineups. One of the best examples is this:

... yet somehow it wasn't for the R-Class... which was precisely my point. I simply don't see this occupying a different market segment target.
